JASP Singles Dances
Are Open To Non-Jews

RICHARD PEARL

Staff Writer

A

series of dances pur-
portedly for Jewish
singles have been
promoted to the general
public as well, according to
the promoter.
"We've had combined
dances since January," said
Bob Levy, promoter of the
Friday night "networking"
cocktail mixers and dances
held at the Embassy Suites
Hotel in Southfield.
However, said Levy,
"We're not trying to do
anything misleading."
Levy was queried after a
complaint was received at
The Jewish News, in which
Levy has advertised the
dances as being presented by
the Jewish Association of
Single Professionals (JASP).
He said he is considering
changing the advertising in
The Jewish News to reflect
only the other two groups "if
that is causing problems. We
don't want people to feel
wronged or misled."
He also said the Friday
night dances will be switch-
ed to Sunday nights beginn-
ing in March.
Levy said he has announc-
ed the dances in the Eccen-
tric and Detroit News as be-
ing organized by the Young
Executive Singles Network

and the Oakland County
Single Young Professionals,
as well as by JASP.
He said the reason for the
combined dances was the
lack of bar revenue from
Jewish singles.
"They have pop or they
have water and don't order
alcoholic beverages," Levy
said. "Places like the hotel
require $1,500-2,000 per
night in general revenue, or
they charge you $1,000 for
the room.
"We brought all the
groups together because per-
sons experienced in such
dances realize you cannot
sustain them on a regular
basis with Jews only, week
after week.
"Our bar is doing well," he
said, adding that half of the
$6 admission charge pays for
the free drink each person
receives.
He said even if the dances
were for Jews only, atten-
dance would be difficult to
control. "Do you ask some-
one at the door if they're
Jewish?" He said his most
recent dance, Feb. 2, drew
270 people, of which an
estimated 70 percent were
Jewish.
Levy said JASP is based on
a similar singles program he
helped organize and promote
while he was living in the
Los Angeles area. He said
the purpose of the parties is

Lansing Area Singles
Are Getting Organized

RICHARD PEARL

Staff Writer

F

ive Jewish singles in
the Lansing area may
be seeing their efforts
at planning events for their
fellow Jews beginning to pay
off.
A brunch one month ago
drew 40 Jewish singles. An-
other is planned for 11:30
a.m. Feb. 25 at the Pretzel
Bell Restaurant in East
Lansing, according to Kathy
White, one of the organizers.
Working with her are
David Goodman, Alan
Bloomfield, Lisa Rogin and
Steve Linder. White, Good-
man, Bloomfield and Rogin
grew up together; Linder
joined the others at the first
brunch.
In addition to the brun-
ches, which are planned for

the last Sunday of each mon-
th, the Lansing Jewish Sin-
gles Club is considering a
dinner-and-theater night,
White said.
Functions are open to all
Jewish singles, regardless of
age.
The group has received
names for its mailing list
from Congregation Shaarey
Zedek of East Lansing and
has publicized its events in
temple/synagogue bulletins
and in the Lansing State
Journal.
But White and the others
are sure there are more Jew-
ish singles in the area, given
all the governmental offices
in Lansing.
Persons wishing to be on
the mailing list can call
White at (517) 349-7371 or
write her at 4211 Okemos
Road No. 8, Okemos, MI
48864.
