Beating Them

Continued from preceding page

"I have an opinion but I don't
think I need to mix it up with
basketball. I know in some
ways I represent Israel every-
where I go, but I don't wish to
involve myself in politics. I
came here to play basketball.
Everyone has their own opi-
nion and I respect everyone's
opinion."
While Henefeld has im-
proved each game in his
maiden voyage around the
Big East, Calhoun feels he
will be further challenged
when he sees teams for the
second time.
"He reminds me of the
young phenom that comes up
every spring and hits a lot of
home runs," Calhoun says.
"By the second time around
the league they figure out
how to pitch to him. I have
great respect for our league.
I've seen guys do all right the
first time but by the next time
people have seen a lot of video
tape. If he has a weakness,
they'll find it. He'll get a lot
more attention the second
time around. He may not
have the same people playing
him.
"Nadav, the team, is going
to have to adjust. But he's
gone from being this foreign
guy to a feature guy, to the
first freshman in history to be
the Big East player of the
week . . . Now the challenge
continues."
And should The Day falter,
well, Calhoun won't hesitate
to pop a couple of neck veins,
offering some bleep-bleep
words of coaching encourage-
ment at full volume. Nadav
Henefeld is just one of the
guys now.
He's earned the abuse. 0

Bowler Holman
In PBA Runoff

Akron, Ohio — Marshall
Holman, all-time leading
moneywinner on the Profes-
sional Bowlers Association
tour, is one of four multiple
champions being considered
for inclusion on the perfor-
mance-category ballot for the
PBA's Hall of Fame.

Holman, of Medford, Ore., is
in a run-off with Bob Handley
of Pompano Beach, Fla.; Tom
Baker, Buffalo, N.Y.; and Joe
Berardi, Wellington, Fla.
Holman and the latter three
all became eligible with their
35th birthdays last year.
A maximum of three of the
four can be added to the ex-
isting ballot of seven names,
with two-thirds of the votes
cast by the Hall of Fame
board required to advance to
the final performance ballot.

Akiva Bows
To JAC Team

Akiva Hebrew Day School's
boys basketball team
outscored James Allen
Caldwell Baptist of Detroit in
the final quarter, but it wasn't
enough to overcome a big ear-
ly deficit and the Pioneers
lost, 86-69, last week.
Danny Najman, 23 points,
and Tal Sharon, 20 — in-
cluding four three-pointers —
led the Pioneers. Jamie
Pearlberg added 15.
Next competition for the 4-8
Pioneers will be in this
weekend's tournament in
Toronto.
