on a business-like basis, and
not as a philanthropy, he im-
pressed upon millionaire Aus-
tralian gold-mining magnate
Joseph Gutnick, who put up
the required capital. Soviet
immigrants joining the firm
receive a 20-year, no interest
mortgage for housing, from a
fund set up by Ronald 0.
Perlman, chairman of Revlon.
The newcomers are also
taught Hebrew and English.
SATEC's offices, in
Jerusalem's high-tech in-
dustrial zone at Har Hahotz-
vim, could be located in any
American city. There is wall-
to-wall carpeting, aesthetic
use of colors, cubicle offices,
modern filing system —
neatness and cleanliness
everywhere, which hint of ef-
ficiency and stimulate
confidence.
If things continue at the
present rate, said a company
official, SATEC will shortly
double or triple its growth.
But Branover, and his son,
Daniel, a management expert
who is president of SATEC,
look upon the enterprise as a
model for others to follow.
There are skills and ideas and
trained personnel readily
available, awaiting only
management and capital to
fashion them into commer-
cially sound enterprises.
The result, of course, is
more than the absorption of
the immigrants; it is also a
fillip to the economy of the
country.
Branover has a thick file of
applications from recently ar-
rived Soviet Jewish engineers
and scientists, but can't ab-
sorb them all. He invites,
welcomes, would bless com-
petition with him in this
effort.
And once again he em-
phasizes that this is not chari-
ty. It must be run on a sound
business basis. The marriage
of Eastern European skill and
inventiveness with Western
management and entrepre-
neurship can help transform
the "problem" of absorption
into a blessing.
