New York (JTA) — A
$10,000 reward has been
offered by Satmar Chasidim
here for information regar-
ding a gunman who killed a
revered Satmar leader.
Rabbi Haskel Werzberger,
58, died early Monday morn-
ing after having been kept
alive on a life support
system since Thursday,
when he was shot in the
head while on his way to
morning prayers in
Williamsburg, Brooklyn.
Werzberger, a Holocaust
survivor, was the shamas, or
sexton, of the main Satmar
synagogue, Congregation
Y e t e v Lev on
Williamsburg's Rodney
Street.
Public officials such as city
Comptroller Liz Holtzman,
Borough President Howard
Golden and Mayor David
Dinkins joined dozens of
Satmars in expressing
outrage over the brutal
shooting.
"A life is a life, but it is all
the more tragic when it's a
man of the cloth," Mayor
Dinkins told a daily tabloid
here. Dinkins • visited with
Werzberger's family at
Bellevue hospital on the.
night of the shooting.
"When a respected re-
ligious man and community
leader cannot feel safe out-
side his own home, all of us
feel threatened," Holtzman,
who is the former Brooklyn
District attorney, said in a
statement.
The assailant is described
by witnesses as a Hispanic
man in his 20s.
According to local news
reports, angry Satmar
leaders charged that police
do not adequately patrol
Williamsburg, which has a
huge Chasidic population.
Since many Chasidim arise
before sunrise to go to syn-
agogue, they may be singled
out as easy targets, the
leaders said.
Nazis, Ninjas
To Mix It Up?
Sydney (JTA) — A group of
martial arts exponents call-
ing themselves the World
Ninja Society is ready to
take on members of the neo-
Nazi Australian Nationalist
Movement, which has sur-
faced in Western Australia.
There have been no
physical encounters, but the
Ninja, led by ninjukai taijut-
sui grand master John Ang,
is ready to remove racist
daubings and literature.
The society has opened a
telephone "hot line" for
callers who spot racist graf-
fiti and posters.
The ANM is a small,
secretive group, overtly anti-
Semitic and anti-Asian. It is
alleged to have set fire to a
number of Asian restaurants
in Perth, the capital of
Western Australia.
The ANM has daubed
swastikas and anti-Semitic
slogans on Jewish institu-
tions and pasted offensive
posters in the center of town.
The Jewish community
has reacted by pressing for
more police protection and
anti-racist legislation in the
state legislature.
Community leader Doron
Ur told the Jewish Tele-
graphic Agency that he is
trying to persuade the Lib-
eral opposition to support a
bill by the Labor govern-
ment. Labor has a majority
in the Lower House which
passed the bill, but the Lib-
erals have veto power.
Similar legislation is being
debated in Victoria in
southeastern Australia.
Adjacent New South
Wales, Australia's most
populous state, is the only
one to have introduced
legislation against racial
vilification and vandalism.
