I YOU'RE COVERED With Our T-Shirt! NEWS i•i•mmmi Turner Sorry For CNN Goof Jerusalem (JTA) — The president of Cable News Network, Ted Turner, has apologized to Hebrew Uni- versity Professor Israel Gutman for the "unintentional" distortion of an interview the Israeli scholar gave CNN last year. Gutman, a Holocaust sur- vivor and leading researcher at the Yad Vashem Holo- caust memorial and muse- urn, told the Jewish Tele- graphic Agency last week that he was not fully satisfied with Turner's letter, but would not pursue the matter further. The apology was for the way CNN used remarks made by Gutman in a May 1989 interview concerning a decision by the West Bank Jewish township of Ariel to require Arab laborers it employed to wear distinguishing tags. The broadcast seemed to imply that Gutman was comparing the Ariel or- dinance — which came under fire and was swiftly withdrawn — to the in- famous yellow star the Nazis forced Jews to wear. Immigration Sparks Protest United Nations (JTA) — The Islamic bloc here is demanding that the United Nations take immediate ac- tion to curtail Soviet Jewish immigration to Israel, charging that the Jewish state plans to settle Soviet Jews "in the Palestinian and Arab lands under the illegal occupation of Israel since 1967." Dr. Hamid Algabid, secre- tary-general of the Organ- ization of the Islamic Con- ference, sent a message to Javier Perez de Cuellar last week asking both the U.N. secretary-general and U.N. bodies "to take urgent and effective action" on the question of Soviet Jewish emigration. The Soviet Union has sug- gested that the subject of Jewish immigration to Israel be discussed by the United Nations. Subscribe Today To The Jewish News And Receive A T-Shirt With Our Compliments!
