Once I was asked, as rebbet- zin, to make the motzi (bless- ing over bread) at a Sisterhood dinner. I refused. Uninvolved in Sisterhood, I felt the honor should better go to an active member. No one bought my argument, probably figuring I was play- ing games, and I made the motzi. But I wasn't playing games and I was annoyed at having to play theirs. I would have felt a lot more honored if my Continued from Page 6 risks of venturing where this writer has not gone before, the depicting scene is more properly set as follows: The opening performance of "Man In The Glass Booth" has just concluded; the lights have dimmed. For that one telling moment there is absolute silence. The meaning of what has been acted out. Whether the urn was too far down stage, whether one of the players was a bad drunk, even applause, all such items are truly unimpor- tant. The lights rise; the ac- tors appear en masse; the au- dience responds in the tradi- tional fashion. Yet to everyone there, it is all secondary to what they have experienced. The totali- ty of this production burns brightly and the credit must go to all those associated with it — actors, support crews, director .. . The birth of the Jewish Ensemble Theatre has been auspicious at the very least. J. Laevin Weiner Bloomfield Hills A New Theory About Jewish Men As the father of five beautiful daughters, I had a personal reason to read "Why Jewish Men Don't Date Jewish Women' (Feb. 2). As a father, grandfather and former organizer of a mature singles group, let me in- troduce a different explana- tion for the apparent avoidance of Jewish women. Many years ago, I learned that I am a Jew because that is all the world will let me be. I am not a doctor but a Jewish doctor; I am not a world- recognized author, but a Jewish author; and should I ever decide to change my religion, I will never be call- ed a Catholic, Protestant or Buddhist, but will forever be identified by the Christian world as "the Jewish con- vert." Any child worthy of dating my daughters should realize this before he reaches dating age. Most Jewish men realize that non-Jewish women do not fully accept them, so their relationship is usually extra- curricular or outside of the usual realm. These women have no expectations or re- quisites of Jewish men. In ef- fect, these men have a free ride. Since there is a marriage barrier between interfaith couples, each is free of the challenge of being a "good suitor!' Since marriage is out of the question, Jewish men unconsciously treat gentile women as toys. When a ham- mer is used for work it is no fun, but when this same ham- mer is used for a hobby it becomes a delight. Dating can be stressful, so dating so- meone "who really doesn't count" lifts a heavy burden off a man's shoulders. The couple can now "be themselves." The gentile woman becomes a delectable "forbidden fruit." "She lets me be me" or "I can do things around her that I can't with a Jewish girl" are typical thoughts of a Jewish man who is "just playing around!' Jewish mores are very specific: when you are through sowing your wild oats, it is time to look for a Jewish wife! Now, both the Jewish girl and the Jewish boy look at each other through a different lens. The gentile girl may appear to be carefree in her approach to suitors because there are so many gentile men to chose from. By population statistics, Jewish women must appear more demanding in these quests. Guess what! Jewish parents know the percentages also, and it is only natural
