School can be frustrating.
Bigman sometimes feels it is
more a test of patience, will
and endurance than learning.
"You jump through those
hoops they want you to jump
through and at the end of five
years you're a rabbi. Then you
go do whatever you want,"
Bigman said.
Ideally, she would like to be
a rabbi in Detroit. She wants
to lead a congregation of
600-800 families where she is
not the only rabbi. Personal
preference, however, plays a
small role in her first job. It
depends on where rabbis are
needed in 1992.
She also has thought of be-
ing a Hillel rabbi. "I feel there
is not enough Reform presence
on college campuses," Bigman
said.
More than 100 female rab-
bis have been ordained since
Sally Priesand was ordained
in 1972. "Fortunately, I'm not
forging new frontiers,"
Bigman said. Twenty-seven of
the 71 rabbinical students in-
Cincinnati are women. In
Bigman's class, more than
half the candidates are female.
Bigman does not picture
herself as a feminist. Quite
simply she wants to be a rab-
bi. "I'm determined enough
and sure enough this is what
I want to do that nothing is
going to stand in my way." ❑
