Jewish students in New
York and the Chanukah
party for Soviet Jews spon-
sored by the Council of
Jewish Organizations of
Flatbush.
Also speaking was Rabbi
Leon Feldman, a consultant
to the International Com-
mittee for Inter-Religious
Consultations, who said that
Jews have received mixed
signals from Pope John Paul
II over the years.
On one hand, the pope ap-
peared at the Rome
synagogue. On the other
hand, he received Palestine
Liberation Organization
chief Yassir Arafat and
President Kurt Waldheim of
Austria at the Vatican,
Feldman noted.
He claimed that no move-
ment can be reported to date
on the Catholic Church's
pledge to remove a
Carmelite convent from the
grounds of the former
Auschwitz death camp.
Feldman said that in dia-
logues with non-Jews, "We
can talk about sociology, pol-
itics, economic matters, but
in no way do we talk about
theological matters."
Abraham Foxman, exec-
utive director of the Anti-
Defamation League of B'nai
B'rith who also addressed
the conference, observed
that interfaith dialogue has
one purpose - "to fight anti-
Semitism" and to reach out
to non-Jews to fight anti-
Zionism.
Foxman contended that
Jewish organizations had
expected too much from the
pope when he assumed the
papacy. Foxman stressed
that what the pope says to
his constituency is more im-
portant than what he tells
Jews.

Bush Meets
With Sharansky

Washington (JTA) — Pres-
ident Bush met briefly in
January with Natan
Sharansky, the former
Soviet prisoner of Zion who
now lives in Israel.
Sharansky, chairman of
the Soviet Jewry Zionist
Forum, slipped out a side
door of the White House
after the meeting, avoiding
reporters.
But earlier, White House
spokesman Marlin Fitz-
water said that the president
would be discussing "our
continued support for the
right of Jews to leave the
Soviet Union."
