of security from those of poli-
tics, he said, proceeding to
outline a complex way of
allowing Israel to maintain
security over a Palestinian
entity while permitting lim-
ited sovereignty.
After five, 10 and then 15
years of this experiment,
with Israel gradually adding
more areas, the Palestinians
would vote on an ultimate
solution, deciding whether
to link up with Jordan or
not.
"It's eminently doable,"
Rabbi Hartman said. "What
is needed is to talk clearly,
honestly and with dignity,
and get on with it."
Until then, Israel will con-
tinue to suffer militarily and
morally from "the spreading
cancer" of the intifada, ac-
cording to the rabbi, who ac-
knowledged that he is often
depressed.
But then he added that
since he has no other people
and no other country, he
cannot afford to be depress-
ed.
He described his work as a
battle, but said his goal is
not for the immediate
future. "My task is to plant
the seed."
And then he went back to
his seminar with a group of
resident fellows, Orthodox,
Conservative and Reform,
who share Rabbi Hartman's
dream of making Israel a
country of living, breathing
Jewish renewal. ❑

I NEWS I

Two Yugoslav
Women Charged

Tel Aviv (JTA) — Two
Yugoslav women were de-.
tained in Israel in early
January on charges of spy-
ing for the Palestine Libera-
tion Organization, Ha'aretz
has reported.
The newspaper's
disclosure forced the Haifa
Magistrates Court to lift the
ban it imposed on publica-
tion of the story.
The women were identified
as Victoria David, re-
portedly a convert to
Judaism who immigrated
here two years ago, and her
non-Jewish friend Patricia
Kansevich, who came to
Israel as a tourist'.
They were accused of
photographing strategic
sites and sending the photos
to the PLO. The women ad-
mitted taking the pictures,
but denied they were for the
PLO.
