replaced Ann Landers as the
advice columnist for the
Chicago Sun-Times. His col-
umn appears locally in the
Detroit Free Press and 40
other newspapers across the
country. He is also heard on
WCSX-FM on Tuesday
mornings.

Youth Aliyah Exec
To Speak In Franklin
Dr. Chaim Peri, director-
general of Youth Aliyah's
Orde Wingate Children's
Village in Israel, will appear
on behalf of the Human Ser-
vices/Communal Services sec-
tion of the 1990 Allied Jew-
ish Campaign at 7:30 p.m.
Feb. 26.
The dessert buffet reception
will take place at the home of
Jane and Larry Sherman in
Franklin. It is open to con-
tributors of $200 and over to
the Campaign.
Dr. Peri has been the
director-general of Orde
Wingate for the past decade.
Since 1981, he has been par-
ticularly active in the educa-

tion and absorption of Ethio-
pian children, many of whom
arrived in Israel without
parents.
Alan Yost is chairman of
the Human Services/Com-
munal Services section of the
Professional Services
Division.

Report Meeting Focus
Will Be Soviet Jews
Allied Jewish Campaign
workers will host University
of Michigan Professor Zvi
Gitelman, an authority on
the Soviet Union and a con-
sultant to the U.S. govern-
ment, Feb. 28 at United
Hebrew Schools in Southfield.
Dr. Gitelman will speak on
"A New Exodus: Soviet Jews
in the Age of Perestroika" at
the progress report meeting.
A light supper will be served
at 6:15 p.m., and the meeting
will begin at 6:45. Advanced
registration is required.
A professor of political
science, Dr. Gitelman has
studied in Leningrad, War-
saw and Jerusalem. He is a
recipient of the Fulbright Lec-
tureship Award and has
received research grants from
the Ford Foundation,
Rockefeller Foundation and
the National Council for
Soviet and East European
Research.
Paul Borman and Joseph H.
Orley are AJCampaign
chairmen.

Six Women's Groups
Volunteer For Phonagift
Six area Jewish women's
organizations teamed up for
the first time, with the Jewish
Welfare Federation Women's
Division and its Business and
Professional women during a
recent Phonagift phonathon
on behalf of the 1990 Allied
Jewish Campaign.

Workers from Women's
Division were helped by
volunteers from B'nai B'rith
Women's Council; Einstein
Chapter of B'nai B'rith
Women; Shaarey Zedek
Sisterhood; Greater Detroit
Chapter of Hadassah; Sharon
Group of Hadassah; and
women of Young Israel of
Southfield.
The phonathon raised
$224,000 from 3,200 con-
tributors for the Campaign.
More than 200 volunteers
made calls to Detroit-area
women during six sessions in
January.
