said several religious groups
represented by the MSU Re-
ligious Advisors Association,
to which Hillel belongs, have
given their support.
Mark Gilbert, Hillel pro-
gram director, said,
"Basically, we're just get- -
ting started. It's a matter of
legwork."
Both Gilbert and Block re-
ported receiving telephoned
death threats this week.
Gilbert took a call at the
Hillel office Feb. 5 in re-
sponse to his letter in that
day's State News about Far-
rakhan's appearance. The
call was being investigated
by campus police.
The caller reportedly told
Gilbert to "leave Farrakhan
alone. He's coming whether
you like it or not."
Block said he received a
similar call at his apartment
the next day. Funds for Far-
rakhan's appearance —
$5,000 — were approved by
the MSU provost's office, but
protests by Hillel officials

whether the moratorium

The Detroit Jewish
Welfare Federation, in a
letter dated Feb. 2, urged
MSU President John
DiBiaggio to reverse the
decision allowing Farrakhan
to speak.
The letter said Far-
rakahn's speeches have
"inflamed antagonism bet-
ween groups and caused
great damage to interracial
cooperation." It said, "It
would be a disgrace to the
reputation of your fine in-
stitution to be the only uni-
versity in the nation to pro-
vide a venue for Rev. Far-
rakhan."
The letter was signed by
Federation President Mark
E. Schlussel and Vice Presi-
dent David Hermelin.
