She also wants to create a
lounge so teens will have a
place to "hang out" while
they are at the Center.
Usually when teens are
done with an activity they
have little to do but wander
the halls, Friedman said. A
lounge with access to the
gym would give them a place
to do homework and so-
cialize.
She also hopes to establish
a youth council from area
youth groups to improve
interaction and conduct a
fund-raising drive for the
Allied Jewish Campaign.
Oliff said, 'We're not try-
ing to duplicate what is out
there in the community. We
will do something different."
"Serving teens is a job a lot
of organizations share. We

and BBYO are major part-
ners," said Oliff, adding they
are not in competition with
the synagogue youth pro-
grams.
Despite all the troubles the
Center has had keeping a
Teen Connection director,
Oliff is optimistic about the
future. "Vivian is on the
staff and the community
does want a teen program."
Weiner believes, "Teen
Connection has great
possibilities. I know what is
happening with Teen Con-
nection in other cities and
it's really blossoming. We
know no program can be
built overnight."
Friedman plans to stay to
make Teen Connection
work.
"I'm not going to quit,"
Friedman said. "I want to be
with the kids. I don't do this
for the money." ❑

"outraged
mother's milk"
those striving to promote bet-
ter Jewish-Polish relations."
The American Jewish Com-
mittee has been involved in a
dialogue with Polish-
Americans, through the
auspices of the Polish
American Congress, for more
than 10 years. The hurt and
anguish resulting from
Shamir's unfortunate
remarks can only be
understood in light of the
reaction of Jews to Cardinal
Glemp's statement following
the incident that occurred on
the grounds of the Carmelite
Convent at Auschwitz.
The AJCommittee has
engaged in fostering positive
intergroup relations with not
only Polish-Americans,
Ukrainian-Americans and
other Baltic ethnic groups,
but also with Afro-Americans
and Latin-Americans. If by
these efforts we can help
dispel antagonisms and mute
stereotypical reactions, we
will have done a great service
to our own community and
also the cause of American
pluralism.

There now exists an even
greater reason for our efforts.
The Warsaw pact nations in-
volved in the social, political
and economic restructuring of
their societies have all been
threatened with the
resurgence of virulent anti-
Semitism and the possibility
of violent physical actions
against Jews. To forestall
these threats, the American

Jewish community must
become increasingly active in
protesting such actions.
These protests could be much
more effective if done with
the cooperation of fellow
ethnic groups.
Let us not allow the tragic
failure of our government to
condemn the actions of the
Nazis during the Holocaust
period to repeat itself if the
persecution of Jews in Europe
occurs again.

Milt Aptekar
Still Performing

What a shock to read of the
"retirement" of Milt Aptekar,
director of Fenby-Carr
("Strike Up The Band,"
Feb. 2). Milt, Gene Fenby and
Morrie Lax (known as the
Singing Schoolteachers) are
still performing.
