Trees have helped reclaim the land of Israel.
development and blossom-
ing." So to realize the redemp-
tion, JNF caused the land to
blossom. The first tree fund
was launched just a few years
after the founding of JNF in
1910, in honor of Theodor
Herzl, the father of modern
Zionism.
Since then, the 200 million
trees planted by JNF have
done more than adorn barren
terrain with lush mantles of
green. Our JNF forests and
woodlands have done much to
reverse the damage caused by
centuries of neglect and war-
fare, the ravages inflicted by
those who occupied the land
with little or no regard for its
future well-being. The
"blanket of green" has made
it possible for farmers to
cultivate land that for cen-
turies had been considered in-
arable. The roots of our
precious trees anchor shifting
sands, prevent erosion, allow
for more efficient irrigation,
and actually create the soil
which enables the pioneers on
the land to build new lives for
themselves in the previously
desolate wilderness.
The trees cleanse and cool
the atmosphere, and reduce
noise and air pollution, mak-
ing Israel's high-paced cities
more comfortable for their
residents. Parklands provide
oases of relaxation and
respite from the pressures of
the often volatile life in the
Middle East. Israel's magnifi-
cant forests and the trees that
are the backdrops for recrea-
tion areas help in promotion
of the crucial tourist industry.
JNF plantings are welcome
additions to military installa-
tions, where they are a source
of pleasure to those who serve
their country in uniform, and
a background of beauty for
much-needed recreational ac-
tivities and family visits.
An entire industry has
grown around the planting
and maintaining of forests.
JNF has been the first
employer of many new im-
migrants to Israel; the roots
they plant aid in the planting
of their own roots in their new
home. And the trees assist in
insuring the security of
Israel's people. As they form
screens alongside border
roads and settlements, they
help protect the lives of those
who live and travel in these
vulnerable areas.
Those who have planted
trees - with their own hands
during a visit to Israel, or
through contributions to JNF
- feel the palpable bond
created by the sinking of roots
in the soil of Eretz Yisrael.
When Jews everywhere plant
trees to express shared joy or
sorrow with loved ones, they
know they are planting
something living in Israel's
earth, something that will
grow and grow strong, fructi-
fying the developing nation in
a most elemental way. And
they express and experience
the unbreakable tie with the
Jewish state, whose basis is
their unending belief in the
land, the people, and the faith
of Judaism. ❑
