JAYE COOPER, general manager at Ristorante di Modesta on Northwestern Highway, plays the role of Mama in the current Attic Theatre presentation of A Shayna Maidel which opened today and runs through Feb. 25. It's about a Holocaust sur- vivor's reunion with her fami- ly in America as she comes to live in Brooklyn with her American-raised sister. A Shayna Maidel was first seen at the Academy Theatre in Atlanta, Ga. . . . After many well-received produc- tions it moved to the off- Broadway West Side arts theater for a successful run. Attic Teatre is on Grand Boulevard across from the Fisher Building. I LEFT Zeman's Bakery on Greenfield north of 10 Mile and headed for Rialto Cafe via the new 1-696 expressway . . . In six minutes I was at Rialto Cafe on Woodward just north of Nine Mile . . . Im- agine . . . only six minutes away from that wonderful fresh turkey cut right off the bird. NAME OF Armando's- Shalimar Mexican-Indian restaurant on Orchard Lake Rd., which now serves about 75 percent of the latter fare, will have a name change soon . . . With Armando Galan out of the picture, the title will solely be Shalimar and a decor facelift is slated to take away the present Mexican look . . . Food will be 100 per- cent that of India. STRANGE WHY a local magazine keeps the same comments about restaurants month after month . . . Some of the places aren't even in business anymore. THIS SUNDAY is another biggie for culinary en- thusiasts . . . Southfield's an- nual "Michigan the Boun- tiful" gourmet tasting featur- ing creations by some of Michigan's top chefs. It's from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. in the Southfield Civic Center Pavilion on Evergreen and Civic Center Drive. Tickets are $35 at the door or $30 if gotten by today .. . All proceeds benefit the Michigan Chefs de Cuisine Association scholarship fund for apprentice chefs. City of Southfield and MCCA are co-sponsoring the always-awaited event which is limited to 1,000 persons. JUST A THOUGHT . . . If surgeons can do very delicate operations while wearing skin-tight rubber gloves, why can't foodhandlers and waitpersons in restaurants . . . (Remember when some of your top restaurant waiters used to wear those clean white gloves?) . . . No doubt of it . . . the adherence to better food handling hygiene will in- spire customer confidence .. . and bring more business .. . to say nothing of improving a restaurant's image. ROMANCE, ROMANCE by Birmingham Theatre for five weeks, appropriately opens on Valentine's Day, Feb. 14. It's two musicals at the same time . . . The opening one has a man and a woman in turn-of-the-century Vien- na, wealthy, bored, strangers to each other . . . Each decides to go into the city disguised as a working-class person in pur- suit of true love . . . They meet by accident and romance number one begins. The second musical has two modern, married couples vacationing together and wondering what it would be like to be married to the part- ner in the other couple . . . All ends happily with everyone in love. COULD BE that folks will soon be able to get true kosher hot dog sandwiches at Palace in Auburn Hills .. . The present Isaac Gellis hot- dogs are served on non-kosher buns . . . But Zeman's may be supplying them in an all- kosher Isaac Gellis cart.
