The event is co-sponsored by the Greater Detroit Jewish Coalition for Peace in the Middle East, an umbrella group recently formed to pro- mote the views of the Israeli peace movement in the area, and the 'Thmple Emanu-El Social Action Committee. Dr. Segal was one of the first American Jews to open a dialogue with the PLO leadership. His writings are widely credited with having played an important role in the events leading up to the PLO's renunciation of ter- rorism and acceptance of Israel's right to exist. The Jewish Peace Lobby (JPL) is an organization work- ing to promote a just and lasting resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. When Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Shamir visited the U.S. last November, JPL organized an open letter to him signed by over 200 American rabbis, in which they urged him to "turn to the Palestinians, acknowledge them as the equal bearers of rights, and offer to withdraw from the territories in exchange for peace and security." An expert on propaganda and communication, David Olesker, will discuss how Israel supporters can respond to anti-Israel propaganda. League Announces Award Program The League of Jewish Women's Organizations will prepare the annual award program for eligible high school seniors. To qualify, the applicant must submit a one page essay on the topic, "Soviet Jews Leaving or Staying — What is our Responsibility as American Jews?" Each applicant must have a minimum 3.0 grade point average and a formal Jewish education as well as being in- volved in community service. A cash prize will be award- ed. Beth Shalom Is Remodeling Congregation Beth Shalom in Oak Park has completed the first phase of a projected $150,000 remodeling project on its building. The social hall was constructed in 1953 and the sanctuary in the 1960s. Beth Shalom has installed new lighting in the sanc- tuary and lobby, repaired and recarpeted the sanc- tuary, installed new ban- nisters and refinished pews and wall panels. President Richard Berg said the congregation is planning new landscaping and refurbishing the glass panels representing the Ten Commandments outdoors, and renovation of the kit- chen. Armenians Cite California Rabbi The Knights and Daughters of Vartan of St. John's Armenian Church in Southfield will honor a California rabbi Feb. 3 for his efforts on behalf of world recognition of the Armenian genocide. Rabbi Kenneth I. Segel of Temple Beth Israel in Fresno was instrumental in the recent passage of a Union of American Hebrew Congregations resolution on the Armenian genocide at the hands of the Turks. Segel will speak at 10 a.m. Feb. 3 at St. John's.
