Congregation B'nai Moshe
will resume its Torah for Tots
program at the West Bloom-
field Jewish Community
Center 10 a.m. Feb. 4. Rabbi
Allan Meyerowitz will lead
the children in songs, games
and stories around the theme
"Tu B'Shevat — Making
Israel Green." Adults must be
accompanied by a child, 2-5
years old. There is no charge,
and children of non-members
are welcome.
Rabbi Meyerowitz also will ,
conduct a "Rap with the Rab-
bi" session for the United
Synagogue Youth 5 p.m.
Feb. 4 following a pizza dinner
at the home of Astrid and El-
ly Meisler, 27406 Everett in
Southfield. The teen-agers
will make plans for social ac-
tion projects. Guests are
welcome. There is no charge.
The B'nai Moshe USY
chapter is conducting a
Passover candy sale. Proceeds
will go toward the chapter's
annual pledge for tikun olam.
Circulars describing the can-
dy for sale may be obtained

placing orders is Feb. 8.

The Temple Emanu-El
Couples Club will hold a
Cruise Night 7:45 p.m. Feb.
10 at the temple. There will
be a disc jockey and dancing,
a casino, contests, prizes and

the first of three talks on the
theme "Fall of the Com-
munist Empire" 8:30 p.m.
Feb. 5. His topic will be "Ger
many — East and West."
There is a charge.
Rabbi Wine will describe
the philosophy and programs
of the temple and Humanistic
Judaism 8:30 p.m. Feb. 7 at
the temple.

scholar-in-residence.
On Feb. 9 he will be the
guest speaker at Beth El's
Rabbi B. Benedict Glazer In-.
stitute for the Catholic, Pro-
tstant and Eastern Orthodox
clergy of Metropolitan
Detroit.
Started during World War
II, the institute today hosts
more than 300 members of
Detroit's clergy for a day of
lectures and learning about
one another's traditions. Rab-
bi Greenberg wil speak on
"Triumph of Life: Judaism as
a Covenant Religion" and
"Confronting the Holocaust:

Jerusalem (JTA) —Former
Sephardic Chief Rabbi
Ovadia Yosef has run afoul
of the ultra-Orthodox Eda
Haredit community over
when to light the Sabbath
candles in Jerusalem.
Yosef, who heads the
Sephardic Council of Sages,
ruled recently that 20
minutes before sunset was
ample time.
The haredi insist it must
be 40 minutes. Their Beth
Din (religious court) an-
nounced this week that it
may condemn or even ex-
communicate the prestigious
Sephardic rabbi, unless he
reverses himself.
According to Halachah,
Sabbath candles must be lit
18 minutes before sunset.
But the longstanding tradi-
tion in Jerusalem has been
to light the candles 40
minutes before sunset, ap-
parently because the city's
high altitude might give the
impression that the Sabbath
begins later than it does.
Despite the threat from
the Eda Haredit, observers
of the religious scene here
doubt any measures will be
taken against Yosef, a
highly respected religious
authority within and outside
the Sephardic community.
But the controversy could
result in a Sephardi split
from the Eda Haredit.
Yosef raised their hackles
when he ruled recently that
