Although Demetrios is ensconc- ed in the corporate world, he looks like a Renaissance man. His black hair flows to his shoulders while his Greek accent adds a European flair to his gregarious personality. Despite ap- pearances, his mind is in tune with the latest fashion trends. Rachel Leonard, fashion editor of Bride's magazine, views Demetrios as a dominant bridal designer in the 1990s. "Jimmy Elias is one of the most versatile designers in the bridal market today. He understands the bride. His gowns, which cover the entire range of moods from traditional and roman- tic to sleek and sensuous, always give her something extra: an aura of drama, glamour and style," says Leonard. Demetrios made a natural tran- sition into the fashion business. After his family emigrated from Greece and settled in Ohio, his mother opened a small bridal shop. While Demetrios attended college, his constant enthu- siasm and interest helped the family business. Eleven years ago, the Ilissa bridal company in New York City was put up for sale because the owners wanted to retire. Demetrios purchas- ed the company and began building his bridal empire. Demetrios will not divulge annual sales but he claims his bridal company is one of the top five in the country. His gowns are sold internationally, and he has a second agency in Israel to handle the European and Oriental trade. All of his gowns have one com- mon element: a cathedral train. "Our signature is a very long train with lots of beading," says Demetrios. The full trains add a romantic touch, perfect for a garden or synagogue wedding. But Demetrios' success lies not with his signature gown but with his abili- ty to design many different styles. Demetrios creates gowns with different moods. Some are romantical- ly designed with beads, ruffles and lace, while others are sexy and sleek
