tion of the house, built in 1785, has
hand-cut, wide-planked, yellow pine
flooring that's uneven with age.
In summer, nearby outfitters can
supply you with canoes and equip-
ment for paddling on the Pocomoke.
Just paddle around the bend as you
leave Snow Hill, and you're in a
natural river wilderness.

At the Ashby Inn, owner Roma
Sherman has captured the feeling of
her native England, recreating a pub
atmosphere in the tiny town of Paris,
located in the heart of Virginia hunt
country. The Tap Room, originally the
kitchen with its stone fireplace and
walnut beams, is a favorite rendezvous
among trainers, breeders and riders.
This is a cozy, friendly retreat in which
guests at dinner move from table to
table exchanging greetings.
The Ashby Inn, a rambling, white-
frame, three-story private residence
built in 1829, sits on the east end of
Main Street. John and Roma Sherman
converted it from a private residence
to an inn in 1984. The six guest
rooms are furnished with hand-painted
wardrobes, quilts and coverlets, Orien-
tal rugs and blanket chests, all dating
to the early 1800s, most from local an-
tique shops in the Shenandoah Valley.
Four have private baths; the two
dormer rooms on the third floor share
a full bath and water closet.
