Two styles of veils are currently
popular: the pouf veil, which is at-
tached to the back of the headpiece,
and the waterfall veil, which is cut on
the bias. Says Marie, "All of our head-
pieces can be worn with a full-length
veil. Nowadays, fingertip veils have
been replaced by waltz-length veils."
Lee Fein of the Marisa Collec-
tion, in New York City, likes head-
pieces to be understated. The reason?
"Because better gowns, like the ones
we make, are silk and don't need a lot
of decoration."
According to Fein, there are two
schools of thought on bridal gowns —
very very ornate gowns, full of glit-
ter, or silk, understated. There's a cer-
tain type of bride who likes the glit-
tery gowns, and with a glittery gown,
a glittery headpiece goes well. It gives
an overall defined look to the outfit."
That, however, is not Marisa's cus-
tomer. To accompany their gowns, the
company makes raw silk bows, which
are worn low on the back of the head
with a detachable cathedral-length veil
and an on-face blusher veil.
Fein mentions that wreaths and
headbands are also currently popular.
And there is always a demand for fresh
flowers, which are attached to a comb
and are worn in lieu of a headpiece.

Priscilla Kidder of Priscilla of
Boston, in Massachusetts, sees a
trend towards simpler, less fussy head-
pieces, "worn off the top of the head
and off the face. Now, instead of lots
of tulle and illusion lace covering the
face, the headpieces calls attention to
the face. The big, fluffy veil attached
to a heavily beaded headpiece is out.
Now it's back to a beautiful simplicity."
Headpieces are getting daintier, too.
Tiaras are making a comeback, "very
sparkly with pearls and crystals, but
not too high, a maximum of two inch-
es in height," she says. Bands across
the forehead are still being worn, "but
not too far down on the forehead:'
Also making a comeback are lace
mantillas because they go with the
preferred bridal gown style. The trend
in gowns is a soft, silhouette.
