weren't. Texas was wonderful for man-
tillas and hats," he remembers.
His company's biggest selling veil
is the cathedral length, "which is the
longest veil length most girls can han-
dle." Coming into vogue is the long
veil with beads scattered on it and
with a narrow edging of pearls. "It
gives a pretty look as the bride walks
down the aisle," he notes.
Marionat Bridal is a New York
City bridal millinery company. Ac-
cording to Marie (who preferred not
to give her last name), the current
trends are for flowers and for cascades
of pearls on one side of the headpiece.
Actually, she says, "anything with
movement is popular. It could be
sparkles, crystals, things on stems —
anything that has motion when the
girls walk down the aisle or are on the
dance floor. This is because girls now-
adays have long, full, curly hair and
it would be hard to see somthing like
a Juliet cap, for instance. But some-
thing that shoots sparks or has mo-
tion, you can see amid the hairstyle."
Certain headpieces sell well in the
South and nowhere else. "Picture hats
are popular there. Also Edwardian
hats, which sit on one side of the
head, with one side rolled up. It's a
very feminine look," Marie says.
Other styles' time has passed.
"Mantillas are out, lace veils are out.
At one time, Juliet caps were popular,
tiaras were popular. Now you have
capelets, which sit on one side of the
head. You also have crowns and tiaras
in daintier versions than before, which
give a girl height."
Marionat Bridal is wholesale only,
working with bridal shops to design
headpieces for incoming merchandise.
The company produces two lines per
year. The spring line is keyed to the
softer gown fabrics, like organza, and
tends to have a lighter frame, many
flowers, and small flowers like lily of
the valley and baby's breath. The fall
line is keyed to heavier gown fabrics
like satin and taffeta, and tends to have
more beading. Fall headpieces can
have flowers but they are usually big-
ger, like roses. Headpiece prices are
tied to such factors as the number of
