should be restrained and elegant. No
crystals and sequins for his brides,
unless their gown is such. But the girl
should not glitter like a Christmas
tree," he declares.
His main design is a small, season-
less headband that sits on the back
of the head. He makes about three or
four different headband shapes, all
matched to the lace and fabric of his
gowns.
Christos designs other types of
headpieces, too. One is a cluster of
two to three flowers, like roses, in the
same fabric as the gown. Last year, he
designed a pillbox headpiece that sold
quite well but it is not a style with
universal appeal.
"I don't believe in crowns and tiaras
because they overpower the face of
the young lady. I don't believe in
bands that go across the forehead
because the majority of girls don't look
good in that style and also, the bands/
wreaths flatten the hair and spoil the
girl's hairdo," Christos says.
Most of his customers want detach-
able veils. Christos does not like short
veils, unless the bride is wearing a
short dress. He prefers to match the
veil to the length of the dress; for ex-
ample, a floor-length dress with a
floor-length veil. "The veil should be
like a cloud as you walk down the
aisle, not something hanging down
your back," he says.
Veils are always white or ivory but
his headbands may be white, ivory,
pink or a combination of these colors.
Jon Bradley heads Couture
Collections, an 11-year old Chicago
company that only makes headpieces.
"We're not for everybody," he admits.
"The collection is based on glamour,
and everything we do is on a grand
scale. A dress manufacturer will design
a gown and if it has a bow on it, he'll
make a headpiece with a bow. We're
more thought-out than that, we pay
attention to detail?'
Prices tend to be grand, too.
Heapieces run from a minimum of
$300 up to $1,600; the average head-
piece costs $500. But then, Bradley
