and against a lot of guys, it
works well. But against Lendl
and McEnroe, maybe it
doesn't work as well. So
maybe this year I'm going to
concentrate on playng a little
more aggressively."
Like recent opponent Con-
nors, much of Gilbert's suc-
cess stems from his work
ethic.

"I put out every time I play
and then I just let the result
speak for itself," the No. 3 pro
says.

"I'm not a talker; I don't
fist-pump on the court. I just
feel like it's best to let my rac-
quet do the talking. And
that's the best way for me to
play." El

lot of teenaged
hockey players never
get the chance to play
teams from halfway around
the world.
But Brad Stoller, 15, of
West Bloomfield is different:
he's already played against
— and helped defeat — teams
from the Soviet Union and
Czechoslovakia.
He did that this season as
goalie for Genuine Parts
Distributors (G.P.D.), the
AAA Bantam Major hockey
team which represented
Michigan in "Glasnost on
Ice," the first International
Friendship Hockey Tourna-
ment. Besides the
Detroiters, the Thanksgiv-
ing tourney included teams
from Toronto, Montreal and
the host city, Chicago, in ad-
dition to the U.S.S.R.'s
Estonia and Czech teams.
G.P.D., the reigning
Michigan National Hockey
League and state champion,
had Stoller in the nets as it
defeated the Czechs, 5-3, in
the tourney's second game,
then handed the Estonian-
Russian crew, who had
played together since age 4,
their first loss of the year,
4-3, on the final day of the
five-day event.
It was the first time Soviet
teams for 15-year-olds had
been allowed to play in the
United States and G.P.D.
became the only team to
ever beat a Soviet squad in
non-Olympic competition in
the U.S. However, the
Michiganders, who suffered
an overtime loss to Chicago
in the tourney, finished as
runners-up to the Estonians.
Stoller, who called the
tourney "exciting and tir-
ing," gave an Estonian
player a Pistons T-shirt.
Since then, Stoller has
emerged as G.P.D.'s, and the
MNHL's, premier
goaltender, having blocked
252 of 284 shots-on-goal for
an 88.7 percent saved
average and a smashing 1.68

goals-against average per
game.
"For our age group right
now, he would have to be
considered an outstanding
goalie," said G.P.D. coach
Andy Weidenbach, whose
team practices at Com-
puware Arena in Oak Park.
The coach cautioned,
however, that "it's awful

hard to predict" where a
youngster will be de-
velopmentally the next year,
because of growth and other
factors, including interest in
the game.
Stoller's teammate, goalie
Mike Lazars, has a 2.28 GA
average and an 88.2 percent
saved average.
As of Sunday, G.P.D. had
compiled a 1989-90 team
record of 31 victories, 6
defeats and 4 ties. Stoller
has 15 wins, 3 losses and a
tie. His record includes a 9-0
league mark and a 4-2-1
record in tourneys.
Stoller "really seems to
keep his composure and
that's a great quality for a
goaltender, considering the
pressure that comes with the
position," said Weidenbach.
He added that Stoller isn't
