BACKGROUND: Franklin Ellias grew up
in northwest Detroit and recalls his
parents being active in Jewish charities.
His bar mitzvah was at Congregation
Shaarey Zedek. "I was (photographer)
Leo Knight's first bar mitzvah."
After he was graduated from
Mumford High School in 1961, he
attended the Detroit Institute of
Technology. While attending school, he
enlisted in the Naval Air Reserve.
About the time he received an
honorable discharge, he attended Wayne
State University.
Ellias believes education is very
important, but at that time schooling
was difficult for him so he began
working in the retail industry. After
working at three or four jobs during a
few years, he was recruited into the
insurance business in 1967. His mentor
and boss was Sy Raboy of Connecticut
Mutual Life Insurance Co.
In 1972 he assumed a management
position with the Paul Revere Co. that
lasted six years. Then David Hermelin
recruited Ellias to work for his
insurance firm. Two years later, in 1980,
he opened his own company.
Ellias writes articles and does public
speaking on health and insurance
benefits. His articles appear frequently
in Lawyer's Weekly, Michigan Business,
magazine, and Best's Review. He also
gives seminars at community colleges.
Every two months he is interviewed by
Ed Richards on WOMC radio. The last
time he was on the air, Ellias had the
opportunity to meet a childhood hero —
Soupy Sales.
Ellias is active in the Jewish
community. He is past president of the
Jewish National Fund and is vice
president of the Jewish Community
Council. One highlight of his volunteer
work involved his Washington, D.C., trip
with non-Jewish clergy to learn about
U.S.-Israeli relationships.
Ellias believes in involving non-Jews
in Jewish causes. He was instrumental
in having Tom Turner of the AFL-CIO
honored by the Jewish National Fund.
Ellias also volunteers his services as
a consultant to the Jewish community.
He has helped VAD and other
organizations.
