"And this is it," says Genet, poin- ting to the sturdy and elaborately carved ark that is one of the prized possessions in the large sanctuary. "This is the original piece from the 1846 synagogue." The present synagogue was designed in 1909 by Jewish architect Emile Weil, who won an architectural corn- petiton. "Among the bids for that competition was an ar- tist's proposal for $10,000 to design stained glass win- dows," says Genet. "Unfor- tunately, at the time, the members couldn't afford it. And the artist's name was Marc Chagall." But the congregation has prospered since then, and recently completed a new ad- dition, a garden and chapel in pastel Art Deco style, a con- trast to the ornate main sanctuary. The blend of old and new in Iburo synagogue typifies New Orleans Jewish life, which, like the city itself, is an in- triguing mix of many flavors. ❑ Family Program Set In Israel Washington, D.C. — Ap- plications for the summer 1990 LEVI (Living Ex- perience Vacation in Israel) program are now being ac- cepted at B'nai B'rith inter- national headquarters in Washington. LEVI, designed and ad- ministered by the B'nai B'rith Israel Commission in cooperation with the World Zionist Organization and the Jewish National Fund, has developed into a summer pro- gram in Israel for families. At the core of the program is the opportunity to be a part of Israeli life. While young children play and make friends at day camp, parents and teenagers fill their mor- nings with volunteer work in a local hospital, archeological dig, park or other facility. Afternoons are devoted to broadening knowledge — learning Hebrew and study- ing Jewish and Israeli history. Participants are based in a seaside resort on the Mediter- ranean and will explore the land on guided tours covering the Galilee, Jerusalem, Tel Aviv, Masada, the Dead Sea and the Golan Heights. LEVI participants will leave New York on July 12 and return Aug. 5, with an op- tion to extend. The cost in- cludes roundtrip air fare (from N.Y.), all meals, lodging in a comfortable hotel near a lovely beach and tours.
