More Than Reunion
From A 1946 Concert

DANNY RASKIN

Local Columnist

o I married the gal,"
says Nate Rosenberg,
"and boy, was she a
stunning good looker.
"Brother Ed's wedding was
at Lachar's on 12th Street. I
came in from New York,
where I was living then.
"This is October 1946.
Cousin Dubby says to me, 'My
cousin Dorothy Bernstein is
arriving at the Barbizon
Plaza in New York next week.
Why don't you look her up.'
"I did and took her to
Carnegie Hall to see a young
Eugene Istomin making his
debut with the New York
Philharmonic Orchestra.
21-years-old and playing the
difficult and taxing
`Emperor's Concerto' for the
first time. .
"From the third row we
could see beads of sweat on
his forehead. Imagine a stan-
ding ovation from a
sophisticated and blase au-
dience which must have
heard that concert many,
many times before.
"Dorothy saved the concert
program.
"Now it's over 43 years
later, four kids and five
grandchildren. One of our
daughters and her husband
are building a house 18 miles
from Interlochen and we went
for a visit. Mr. Istomin is ap-
pearing there in concert.
What a reunion!
"The concerto is finished
and there are a mob of people
backstage waiting for
autographs. I held up that
1946 program for him to see
and he waved me into the
room saying, 'Don't go away.
I want you to meet my wife
and some friends.'
"His wife is a charmer, Rus-
sian or Italian. His friends
were Mr. and. Mrs. Tom
Monaghan and they were tak-
ing the Istomins to Drum-
mond Island and the next day
to a Tiger ball game. Istomin
is a baseball fan and the
helicopter is waiting.
"Monaghan is a nice sort of
guy, even if Dorothy and I
weren't invited to his island."

VISITING HIS grand-
father's hometown of Newcas-
tle, England, Ed Welford and
wife Joyce, bossfolks of
Travelers World in Sugar
Tree, Orchard Lake Road
north of Maple, discovered
that the city's oldest Jewish
cemetery contained graves of
eight of his aunts . . . The last
one to be buried there was his
aunt Matilda Gaskell in
1851.
The cemetery is next to a
brewery which put in and
cares for a path so folks don't
walk over the plots. 0
