The music. The magic. Romance is chic once more. Classic cocktails. Luxurious cuisine. Sensuous swirling rhythms. Memories are made of this. but still operates a conser- vatory theater program. JET, on the other hand, is "hitting the ground running," says Frank. The cast of 13 for Glass Booth includes 10 Equi- ty actors, a remarkable union-to-non-union ratio for a new theater (the Attic, recognized as Detroit's most artistically adventurous theater, rarely has a cast that large with a ratio like that). The other three actors are professionals who work in the film, radio and TV communi- ty, Orbach says. "We call ourselves the Jewish Ensemble," Orbach says. "Some day I truly hope we will be an ensemble. That means we will be able to hire a roster of actors for the season, and what they will do for us is, artistically, give us The +aik 19-s SUPPER CLUB Friday and Saturday, 7-11 p.m. Reservations suggested: 827-1382 ''''' •••i . ■ Ti) Radisson Plaza Hotel At Town Center 1500 Town Center, Southfield, Michigan 48075 (313) 827-4000 24366 GRAND RIVER "We've had calls from Grand Rapids, Flint and Kalamazoo to see if we would bring our productions." a chance to seek a level of pro- duction — in acting and direc- ting — that you only get by people working together so closely that they work as one." Gary Decker, an instructor and resident designer with the University of Michigan's department of theater and drama, is designing sets nd lights for Glass Booth. His work has been seen and respected at the Attic Theatre and elsewhere. James Lillie, a frequent sound designer for the Birmingham Theatre, will design the audio for Glass Booth. The three-set production is a big undertaking for a fledg- ing theater company, but Or- bach says the choice and ex- ecution of the first production had to be "strong" if they were to be perceived as a ma- jor company. On the subject of the future, Orbach says a four-play se- cond season is being planned to begin in the fall. Musing about the long- term, Orbach echoes the wishes of most every artistic director: "If I had my druthers, I would like a fully- equipped theater. I would like a theater conceived with fly space, a set shop, a costume area, a digital lighting board. I'd ultimately like to see a continuously functioning theater, much like the Attic functions. Part of that depends on getting a space that will permit us." "We're entitled to dream, aren't we?"
