ADDRESS

New York (JTA) — Last
week, for the first time,
delegates from Hungary,
Poland, Estonia, Soviet
Georgia and the Soviet
Union attended an interna-
tional convention of Jewish
students.
In fact, the 20 Soviet
students who attended con-
stituted the largest single
delegation at the World
Union of Jewish Students
convention, held in
Ashkelon, Israel.
Soine 250 students came
from India, New Zealand,
Ecuador, Portugal, the
United States and
elsewhere.
The students addressed
the problems and challenges
facing the Jewish communi-
ty, both in the East and
West. They came to the con-
clusion that oppression has
not been limited to Jews of
the East.
Citing Arthur Hertzberg's
thesis in his new book The
Jews in America, the dele-
gates resolved that "a com-
munity that is ravaged by
the twin forces of assimila-
tion and intermarriage can
be identified as 'Jewry in
distress.'

Jews Ask For
Church Gesture

Rome (JTA) — A week
before the Jan. 17 nation-
wide "Day of Judaism," an
occasion for advancing
Catholic- Jewish dialogue,
the president of Italy's
Jewish community, Tullia
Zevi, has asked the Catholic
Church for a "concrete
gesture" of its good faith on
an issue that has embittered
Jewish-Catholic relations for
more than a year.
Addressing a news con-
ference, Zevi asked the
Church to make une-
quivocally clear its intention
to honor an agreement to
relocate the Carmelite con-
vent presently on the
grounds of the former
Auschwitz death camp in
Poland.
