France and West Germany
have asked for Brunner's
extradition, but have been
told that Brunner is not in
Syria.
Serge Klarsfeld wrote a
letter to Assad, saying, "I
have come to Damascus as a
Jew, as a survivor of the
Nazi genocide, to seek
justice in the Brunner affair.
The argument that (Syrian
authorities) know nothing
about Brunner's presence on
Syrian territory has con-
vinced no one," he wrote.
He also asked Assad to im-
prove the lot of Syrian Jews.
Beate Klarsfeld, who
publicized the letter in Paris
last week, said it was
translated into Arabic by the
French Embassy in
Damascus and delivered to
the presidential palace add
Foreign Affairs Ministry.
She said it was not accepted
at either place. El
Students Clash
On Intifada
Jerusalem (JTA) - Leftist
students sympathetic to the
Palestinians battled right-
wing fellow students on the
Hebrew University campus
last week.
Police, summoned by the
university authorities, end-
ed the fracas without ar-
rests. No injuries were
reported.
The scuffle began when
several leftist Jews and
Arabs attempted to light
candles on the campus "in
memory of the intifada
dead," who are chiefly'
Palestinians. Students of the
opposite political persuasion
demanded a halt to the
ceremony.
The antagonists hurled
epithets such as "Nazis,"
"fascists" and "murderers"
and soon started to throw
punches. But the brawlers
quickly dispersed when the
police arrived.
