very big (5-feet-7, 140
pounds) as goalies go, but he
is quick.
The coach noted that both
Stoller and Lazars beat out
10 other goaltender can-
didates in the tryouts.
A sophomore at Walled
Lake Western High School
whose family belongs to
Temple Shir Shalom, Stoller
admires his older brother,
Andy, 17, who was a goalie
for Team Michigan and
Little Caesars before enroll-
ing at Michigan State Uni-
versity. And there's another
Stoller hockey player corn-
ing up —Craig, 13, who is
playing at Detroit Country
Day in Birmingham while
on an academic scholarship.
"I like ice and snow and
playing hockey with my
friends on the lakes," said
the G.P.D. goalie, who ice-
skated at 3 years of age and
played hockey at 5. Stoller
also likes to study the moves
of Wayne Gretzky and other
professionals during tele-
vised games.
Stoller has a winning tra-
dition going for him: he was
a member of last year's
G.P.D. Bantam Minor
league and playoff cham-
pions, where he had a 1.92
goals-against average. ❑

NEW YEAR'S
RESOLUTIONS

Downtown-Fox

The Downtown-Fox and
Pisgah B'nai B'rith Men's
bowling leagues held their
first inter-league bowling
match Jan. 21 at Country
Lanes in Farmington Hills,
and Downtown-Fox "bagged"
the first-place prize.
The trophy, in fact, was an
old bowling bag. A
Downtown-Fox bowler left his
ball bag at the lanes one
evening and a Pisgah bowler
found it. The Pisgah League
issued a challenge to
Downtown-Fox to win it back.
D-F, led by the team of Sher-
win Newman, Alan Elman,
Paul Kales and Sy Zate,
scored 2581, second highest
total of the tournament.
Newman, a 154 average
bowler, also won the high
series with a 729 and high
single game, 268, with
handicap.
Highest team score was a
2630 by a Pisgah team of
Mary Dictor, Ivan Fenyvesi,
Aaron Kales and Al Stone.
Dictor also was runner-up for
high series, 712, with
handicap.
Larry Katkowsky of D-F
and Aaron Kales of Pisgah,
tied for actual high game,
225.
Joe Burnstein, tourney
director, said the event is
scheduled to be annual.
