National Meeting Slated On Jewish Singles Issues RICHARD PEARL Staff Writer T /- wo Nebraska grand- mothers concerned about the future of Jewish life are planning a nationwide conference on the group most likely to af- fect it: Jewish singles. The National Jewish Singular Agenda, a two-day meeting March 25-26 in Omaha, will be "an intense discussion of what we can do together" to help Jewish singles of all ages — never- married, divorced or widowed — in the face of growing assimilation and in- termarriage, according to Mary Fellman and her sister, Annie Allen. The meeting, described by Fellman as "a grassroots effort to deal with a topic others are not facing up to," is for persons already work- ing with Jewish singles, such as professional or vol- unteer workers from Jewish community centers, federa- tions or synagogues and temples, and Jewish singles groups or publications. She said the one-night schedule is aimed at keeping lodging and meals under $50 per person. The conference will discuss and attempt to coordinate efforts on behalf of Jewish singles, including the publishing of a national quarterly Jewish singles newspaper. The proposal is for free distribution through JCCs and synagogues. "This doesn't mean destroying anything anybody else is doing," in- cluding shadchens (mat- chmakers), said Fellman. "There's just no unified thing for Jewish singles." As for the meeting, she said, "We don't want singles coming in here looking for a party to meet other singles. This is for anybody who, on their own, has said, 'This (helping Jewish singles meet and perhaps marry) is what I want to do.' They have to have the feeling that what they are doing is a mitzvah." The two bubbies — bet- ween them, they have seven children and 17 grand- children — feel that way: since 1986, they have been publishing The Connector, a quarterly Jewish singles newsletter which has yet to turn a profit, said Fellman. She believes the paper is the only one which also carries information about activities and social contacts in about 35 states. Fellman and Allen's publication has given them a unique perspective. Design- ing their paper to reach Midwest Jewish singles age 25-40, the publishing grandmas soon found "there is a world of singles out there in their 50s and older who are also in need of a support system to meet others." The sad part, said Fellman, is that nobody seems to be taking much in- terest in the situation. Sin- gles groups haven't respond- ed to her requests for infor- mation and the presidents of national Jewish organiza- tions haven't responded to her appeal for help in underwriting a national newspaper, she said. "I sent letters to the presi- dents of every national Jewish organization that I thought could be of help, but the only one I heard from was Phil Klutznick (former B'nai B'rith International president and U.S. ambas- sador), who liked the idea and wished us luck.
