Get Vont Bey Deal Rut Don't Buy Until You See the Unlvatoble Dealer , 28111 TELEGRAPH AT 12 MILE & 1-696 SOUTHFIELD 10 FRIDAY, JANUARY 19, 1990 Women unilaterally declared that paragraph of the con- stitution defining the rela- tionship to be null and void by passing a resolution de- claring that B'nai B'rith Women is 'a separate, inde- pendent, autonomous organ- ization.' They wanted, however, to keep the B'nai B'rith name and, in effect, to be identified with B'nai B'rith in name only. For more than a year, in private meetings, we sought unsuc- cessfully to have the women's leadership rescind that resolution. In response to this challenge to the integrity of the B'nai B'rith family, the B'nai B'rith Board of Gover- nors had no other choice than to request the women's leadership either to rescind their separatist resolution and agree to adhere to the B'nai B'rith constitution or no longer be recognized as a part of the B'nai B'rith fami- ly. They were not expelled. The decision was theirs to CHEVROLET'S HIGHEST AWARD FOR - CUSTOMER SATISFACTION 355 1000 make. No weighty issues are in- volved, political or otherwise. Instead, we have a small group of individuals - the B'nai B'rith Women's Ex- ecutive Board - engaged in an effort to form their own organization apart from B'nai B'rith. Now they have made that decision to go their own way. What particularly saddens us all is that we believe that the women's leadership decision to leave B'nai B'rith does not reflect the views of the grassroots membership of B'nai B'rith Women. To the best of our knowledge, the general membership has never been told, in any objec- tive fashion, of the issues in- volved and polled on whether they wished to remain in the B'nai B'rith family or leave to follow an independent course. We regret the course chosen by the B'nai B'rith Women leadership. We wish them well in their new organiza- tion," Reich said. For the past few months, the yeshiva has sought tax exemption status from Oak Park for its property on Greenfield Road south of 10 Mile Road. Although the yeshiva is a school, tax ex- emption status depends on meeting certain qualifica- tions. When the yeshiva applied for tax exemption status with the Oak Park Board of Review, the board denied the request because it was unclear whether the yeshiva owned the property. Gotham Tower Inc. has a land contract with the Oak Park Board of Education to purchase the yeshiva prop- erty and the surrounding area. But last year, the yeshiva, which four years ago opened a high school and college at the former Eleanor Roosevelt Elemen- tary School, purchased the building from Gotham Tower. Assistant City Attorney John Carlson said the yeshiva purchased the building, but the city's tax Q rolls show the entire parcel is still under Gotham's name. Yeshiva Administrator Rabbi Peretz Rushnawitz said to change the tax rolls, the yeshiva wants Oak Park City Council to split the parcel into two lots. The lot split would show Gotham owns the land around the tower, while the yeshiva owns the school. However, Carlson said council members are con- cerned that the lot split will place the radio tower on Gotham Tower's parcel dangerously close to the yeshiva's building. The yeshiva also must grant Gotham an easement for its tower if the parcel is split because one of the sup- porting wires is on the school's property. If the lot split is given, the board of review or assessor can grant the school its tax exemption status. In the meantime, the yeshiva has appealed the review board's original deci- sion to the city's tax tribunal. But Carlson hopes to bypass the tribunal by get- ting the review board to reconsider its decision in March now that the yeshiva can prove it owns the building. 0 (
