I SYNAGOGUES 1 Beth El Institute Hosts Yitz Greenberg Rabbi Irving "Yitz" Greenberg will speak at Tem- ple Beth el's 48th annual Rabbi B. Benedict Glazer In- stitute on Judaism on Feb. 9. Rabbi Greenberg will ad- dress more than 30 members of the Catholic, Protestant and Eastern Orthodox clergy of Metropolitan Detroit at an institute that had its beginn- ings during World War II. At that time, Beth El's Rabbi B. Yitz Greenberg Benedict Glazer sought to ameliorate the prejudice and hatred dividing the city. He invited members of Detroit's Protestant clergy to hear an authority on Judaism and to spend the day sharing one another's traditions. The in- stitute grew slowly during the war years; by the time of Rabbi Glazer's death in 1952, the institute had become a tradition at Beth El. In addition to Rabbi Greenberg's appearance at the institute, he will be with the congregation as scholar- in-residence during the Feb. 9-11 weekend. He will deliver a sermon 8 p.m. Feb. 9 on "What's Right and Wrong About Reform Judaism." At 11 a.m. Feb. 10, he will speak on "What's Right and Wrong About Orthodoxy." The focus of his 10 a.m. Feb. 11 lecture will be "Struggles for Jewish Unity." A full breakfast, for which there is a charge, will be served at 9:30 a.m. As the founder of CLAL: The National Jewish Center for Learning and Leadership, Rabbi Greenberg has devoted much of his efforts to pro- moting intra-Jewish dialogue. A Harvard Ph.D. and scholar, he has published numerous books including a study of Judaism based on an analysis of the Sabbath and the holidays. The public is invited.
