Is Hadassah
In Trouble?

Is Hadassah "running
scared?"
That's the conclusion of
journalist Estelle Gilson.
Writing in Moment maga-
zine on the status of die
largest Jewish organization
in the country, Gilson states
that Hadassah's member-
ship is "static," its income
from dues is down, and it is
having trouble adapting to
the new world of women, one
in which most work and
cannot volunteer as much as
in the past, and in which
women's issues vie for atten-
tion with the Zionism that
has been a staple of
Hadassah.
Jewish feminists, says
Gilson, have faulted
Hadassah's "conservative
leadership for its
"reluctance" to address such
issues as child care and
abortion. Although the
organization's 1989 conven-
tion adopted a pro-choice
resolution regarding abor-
tion, one former national
board member of Hadassah
said the plank had to be
"pushed through" when the
group's executive director
"tried every maneuver to
squash it."

Mayor Makes
Jews 'Goats'

Jews are among the
"chickens, goats and
Judases" who have aban-
doned Washington Mayor
Marion Barry.
That assessment comes
from the beleaguered mayor
himself, at least as reported
in the Los Angeles Times.
Criticized, even by many
former supporters, for his
alleged drug use and
womanizing, Barry was
quoted by the Times as say-
ing, "Come victory day, I'm
gonna cut 'em off at the
kneecaps . . . Jews, too. Jews
should be the last to spread
rumors. They've been
persecuted themselves.
You'd think they'd know
better."
Barry has charged that he
was misquoted in the Times'
story, specifically when he
was cited as saying that
Jesse Jackson, reputed to be
considering a bid to run for
mayor of the nation's capi-
tal, would be "the laughing-
stock of America" if he ran.
"Jesse don't wanna be no
mayor," Barry was quoted in
the Times. "Jesse don't
wanna run nothin' but his
mouth."
Barry did not deny his
comments in the Times
about Jews.
