Levine and Boxer are
regarded as excellent cam-
paigners with a good media
presence, key factors in
media-oriented California.
Levine is especially popular
with pro-Israel political ac-
tion committees. PACs could
play a particularly impor-
tant role in California,
where the Senate race is ex-
pected to cost more than $30
million.
And Boxer received na-
tional attention during last

year's legislative battle over
language in a House ap-
propriations bill allowing
public funding of abortions
for the victims of rape and
incest.

"She came off as very dy-
namic, very competent,"
said one top Jewish political
analyst here. "She made a
lot of heads turn. She'd seem
a natural to go after
Cranston's seat."
On the Republican side,
possible contenders for the
seat include Rep. Robert
Dornan, R-Calif.

Jewish Democrats
Still Organizing

Jewish Democrats took
another slow step toward
creating a formal organiza-
tion to bolster Jewish in-
volvement in the party.
In pivotal meetings last
week, leaders of the Jewish
Democratic Study Group,

decided on a more cautious
approach to the development
of an organization roughly
comparable to the National
Jewish Coalition on the
Republican side.
As part of that retrench-
ment, the group appointed
Hyman Bookbinder as the
group's "Washington con-
sultant."

Bookbinder, who served as
Washington representative
for the American Jewish
Committee for two decades,
had argued that basic deci-
sions about funding and pro-
cedure for the new group had
to be made before the group
was actually formed.
Other players in the study
group had pressed for im-
mediate creation of the
organization, leaving some
of the details for later.
Bookbinder's appointment
represents a triumph for
those urging caution.
"It is important that we go
slowly, that we avoid all
possible problems of
overlap," he said. "During
the initial consultations,
some people warned us of
certain problems. We want
to be able to exert ap-
propriate kinds of influence
on the party so it will remain
true to Jewish concerns —
and we want to be able to
persuade the Jewish com-
munity to remain basically
friendly to Democratic can-
didates, when those can-
didates reflect what is in the
interests of America and the
Jewish community."
A formal announcement of
Bookbinder's appointment is
expected next week. The
group plans to prepare a
final document laying out
the details of the new
organization in time for the
next election cycle,
Bookbinder said.
