They in- cluded 8 arsons, 4 attempted arsons, 5 bombings and 21 cemetery desecrations. The only event in this category recorded in Michigan was the vandalism of the Temple Emanu-El sukkah. Loben- thal says this should not have been recorded in the arson category. The most serious incident in the United States oc- curred last July when a Holocaust survivor was stabbed to death by a man he accused of scrawling swastikas on his Brooklyn, N.Y., apartment door. The 10 states with the highest number of recorded anti- Semitic incidents in 1989 were: New York (213 vandalism incidents, 115 harassment incidents), New Jersey (112, 42), Massachusetts (95, 45), California (75, 82), Florida (66, 26), Michigan (39, 18), Pennsylvania (30, 22), Maryland (25, 22), Colorado (24, 11) and Ohio (21, 28). In December 1988, 10 percent of the Soviet Jews went to Israel, Aronson said. The Jewish Agency's Sim- cha Dinitz recently predicted Israel would have to absorb between 50,000-70,000 Soviet Jews annually in the coming years. "The question is, what is Israel going to do with all those Soviet Jews" who are often skilled workers with medical, technical and engineering backgrounds, Aronson said. "This is going to be a big challenge and major prob- lem facing the American Jewish community and Jews worldwide in the 1990s." Aronson expressed concern about how recent changes in Eastern Europe could affect relations between Israel and the United States. "If Eastern Europe and the Soviet Union are removed as players in the Cold War with the United States, will Israel lost strategic significance in the Middle East?" he asked. "The changes are over- whelming." Aronson also said he is distressed by the lack of in- terest young American Jews show in Israel. "Many of those in the younger generation are af- flicted by the three A's: af- fluence, assimilation and apathy," he said. "They have no sense of commit- ment to their community or to Israel. "The generation that witnessed the Holocaust is moving out of active leader- ship" and no replacement is in sight, Aronson said. "The question is, how do with motivate that (younger) ge- neration of people?" Jews in the United States are reassessing their view of Israel, he said. The Jewish state can no longer be touted as "the perfect socialist paradise," With the intifada, the Arab uprising in the West Bank and Gaza, the
