Communists
In Disarray

Jerusalem (JTA) — With
Communist regimes in
Eastern Europe falling like
dominoes, a member of
Israel's Communist Party,
Knesset member Teufik
Zayad, confessed publicly
last week that the party had
erred in blindly following
Moscow since the early days
of the Israel.
Zayad, who is also mayor
of Nazareth, the largest
Arab city in Israel, said the
party leaders were deceived
about the Soviet Union, but
they could not be blamed
because they harbored no ill
intentions.
In an address to party
members in Nazareth,
Zayad said "Members of the
Communist Party in Israel
have no ministries, no
villas," alluding to the lux-
urious life-styles of some of
the now-deposed European
Communist leaders, such as
Erich Honecker in East
Germany and Nicolae
Ceausescu of Romania.
He blamed the bu-
reaucracies for the corrup-
tion of Communist regimes
in Europe.
He also seemed to support
the ethnic nationalism ris-
ing within the Soviet Union.
Zayad said he could not
understand why the non-
Russian republics in the
Soviet Union were forced to
use the Cyrillic alphabet to
write their own`languages.
At the same time, he asked
the party members not to
forget the help Moscow gave
the Arab countries.
Zayad admitted that
Israel's Communist Party is
in the midst of a deep inter-
nal crisis.
