Miami Beach SCHECHTER FAMILY Management July 23, 1820, the first in any American synagogue. As might be expected, the more traditional members began to break away. In 1860 they formed B'nai B'rith Jacob, an Orthodox congregation, which today is the largest of Savannah's three synagogues. Agudath Conservative Achim, the oldest congrega- tion in Georgia affiliated with United Synagogue of America, was founded in 1903 by members who had broken off trom B'nai B'rith Jacob. Having outgrown earlier buildings, both con- gregations have constructed architecturally modern synagogues in a residential neighborhood about seven miles south of the downtown historic district. A car or taxi ride is required to reach them. B'nai B'rith Jacob, a buff- colored brick structure at 5444 Abercorn Street, was completed in time for Passover services in 1962. A hand-painted muralon its Eastern wall depicts biblical themes and traditions of the Jewish people. Students of the Old Testament regularly visit to view the mural and attend lectures in which its mean- ings are explained. The holy ark, in a 20-foot-high alcove, is topped with a round stained-glass window featur- ing a Star of David in its center. The sanctuary of Agudath Achim symbolizes Noah's Ark, with sweeping wooden walls that suggest a ship's hull reaching a peak the height of a four-story building. A skylight above the bimah and elongated stained- glass windows representing Jacob's dream and Jacob's wrestling add to the drama of Savannah's newest synagogue, completed in 1972 and located on Lee Bouldvard off Abercorn Street. The Jews of Savannah throughout history have taken an active part in civic life and have fought heroical- ly in the wars involving the city and the entire nation. Markers in the historic district point out the homes of leading Jewish citizens. Although there are no kosher restaurants in Savan- nah, one can find frozen and packaged kosher foods as well as kosher wines in local stores. Fish is plentiful in this port city, and a kosher caterer, Alan Gottlieb, prepares meals for local Jewish families' events and orders meat for observant families. In the small community — approx- imately 2,600 Jewish families — congregants recognize strangers at Sabbath services ( <[ ( <
