Joseph, the Disraeli of ancient Egypt, has saved the country from famine. In previous weeks, Joseph and his brothers were dramatically reunited. Now, Joseph and his father take center stage and exhibit a touching relationship. Joseph adored his father, Jacob. After disclosing his identity to his brothers, Joseph immediately asked them, "Is my father still alive and well?" (Gen. 45:3) After the reconciliation with his brothers, Joseph ar- ranged to move his aged father to Egypt where he could care for him. Jacob became ill and knew his days were numbered. Before he died, he wanted to Richard Hertz is rabbi emeritus of Temple Beth El. bless his grandsons, the sons of Joseph. The sedra describes how Jacob blessed Joseph's sons, Ephraim and Mannasah. Jacob tells Joseph, "Your two sons who were born to you in the land of Egypt before I came . . . should be mine. Ephraim and Mannasah should be mine no less than Reuben and Simeon." Joseph then brings the two boys into Jacob's bedroom. "Who are these?" Jacob's eyesight was dimmed with age. "I never expected to see you again, much less your children as well," Jacob says. Jacob's blessing is reminis- cent of those given by Isaac. In the blessing of Joseph's sons, scripture meant to elevate them by adoption so they might sire the Israelite tribes that would later bear their names. Only Jacob could decide who would be in- cluded in the people of Israel. Only he could impart the divine blessing. "By you shall Israel invite blessings saying: 'God make you like Ephraim and Man- nasah.' " (Gen. 48:20) Future generations would always remember the special bless- ing on the two boys. But the younger child takes precedence over the older. Jacob's life is now complete. He passes on the blessing of Abraham, which his father Isaac had bestowed on him, to his grandchildren Ephraim and Mannasah. Then, realizing his end was at hand, he said to Joseph: "I am about to die but God will be with you and bring you back to the land of your fathers." Jacob then summon- ed all his sons to his bedside to hear his farewell words. This was to be a deathbed will and testament. The Torah records here a series of aphorisms in poetic form. Jacob's last words are among the most difficult text in all of Genesis. Each son is identified with a tribe of Israel.
