Chief Rabbi Rosen. Many of
us met often with him. He
was the activist who refrain-
ed from criticizing and con-
demning because Jews were
being rescued under duress
with permits to leave
Romania for Israel. A heavy
price was paid for the tens of
thousands who escaped to
Israel. Jews were hostages of
the communist tyrant and
there was no condemning
him.
It was no secret to us that
for every person released from
that bondage there was a
price. The Jewish Agency
paid the exacted heavy fees.
Those who left could not take
their positions with them.
A personal experience is in
this recollection: Anna and I
were on the Israel steamer
Herzl from Naples to Haifa in
1955. Refugees were being
transported to Israel with ex-
it permits from Romania
secured for them by the Agen-
cy. We met the family of a doc-
tor who was scheduled to set-
tle in Beersheba. The physi-
cian, who had many years of
practice to his credit, was
frightened. His wife was in-
spiring him with confidence.
To Anna she confided about
the indignities they suffered.
She showed Anna a very
small ring on her finger, and
she said "They allowed my
two children thin little
blankets. They permitted me
to retain this little ring out of
our rich possessions." She
wiped a tear.
Another recollection about
the sad 1950s. Romanian
Jews were being rescued from
the Communist post-Nazi in-
ferno — at a price. The Jewish
Agency and the Israel govern-
ment were concerned that the
opressing dictator and his
cohorts might interrupt issu-
ing exit permits if the truth
were widely publicized. Israel
Ambassador to the U.S.
Avraham Harman assembled
about 100 Jewish journalists
in New York with a plea not
to sensationalize the deals
with the Romanian mer-
chants of Jewish lives. In the
only time of my ever having
differed with my dear friend
Abe Harman I pointed to the
presence with us of Pat
Spiegel of the New York
Times. Pat always joined us at
important national gather-
ings. He said he would not
publicize that meeting. In a
few days, the Bucharest New
York Times correspondent
released the story with some
of the facts about the Roma-
nian trading with Jewish
lives — at a price.
These are all part of the
"Hurban Romanian Jewry."
The history of the road call-
ed hurban includes Romania

under the Iron Guard, of anti-
Semitism in pre-Nazism and
under Nazism during the
years of Hitlerism and
thereafter. Many of the in-
humanities are assembled in
his volume Holocaust —
History of the Jews During the
Second World War by the emi-
nent historian and
biographer of Winston Chur-
chill, Martin Gilbert (Holt,
Rinehart Winston). Here is
one of the tales that will con-
tinue to horrify the genera-
tions to come:
In Romania, the anti-
Jewish hatred of the Iron
Guard burst out anew on
21 January 1941, when
gangs of Legionnaries,
some armed with guns,
other with staves, hunted
for Jews in the streets.
Thousands of Jews were
caught and beaten, hun-
dreds of shops and houses
were looted or burned, and
25 synagogues desecrated.
After three days of these
manhunts, 120 Jews had
been killed.
As in German-occupied
Europe, these killings
were carried out in a
repulsive manner: "Sadis-
tic atrocities unsurpassed
in horror," one of Chur-
chill's private secretaries
described them, "taking
hundreds of Jews to cattle
slaughterhouses and kill-
ing them according to the
Jews' own ritual practices
in slaughtering animals."
The bodies of many of
those murdered were then
hung on meat hooks in the
slaughterhouse, with
placards around them an-
nouncing "kosher meat."
We call the agonies impos-
ed upon us another hurban.
They must serve as the war-
ning for the generations who
now learn about them to bat-
tle against their repetition.
They are admonitions not to
permit Jewish indifference in
confronting them. Again it is
a reminder of the importance
of eternal vigilance. 111
