Peres, is the real power in
the Labor Party. People in
and out of the party could
not contrast Peres' dithering
with Rabin's decisive deal-
making.
Rabin accomplished one
thing more; he managed to
put Ezer Weizman, still an
influential leader of Labor's
dovish wing, in his debt.
Ironically, it was Weizman
who once tried to destroy
Rabin's political career by
revealing that, on the eve of
the Six Day War, Rabin,
then army chief of staff, suf-
fered a nervous breakdown.
In the coming months,
Ezer Weizman will be busy
trying to rehabilitate
himself (and may also face
criminal charges for meeting
with the PLO); Shamir will
confront an angry party
Central Committee that will
demand an explanation for
his flip-flop; and Peres will
be forced to explain his own
dealings with the Palesti-
nians, as well as his failure
to effectively back up his
erstwhile ally, Weizman.
Rabin, on the other hand,
will continue to enjoy an
almost free hand in defense
matters and an exemption
from Likud criticism, which

scam artist who
swindled Jewish
leaders across the
nation was sentenced Jan. 5
to 24 years in prison.
In handing down the harsh
jail term, Denver, Colo.,
District Judge Jeff Bayless
told 27-year-old Daniel Mark
Seiden, a Denver native,
that he was "a pattern
offender" and society had to
be protected from him.
Quoted in The Denver Post,
Bayless said, "The pattern is
remarkable. It goes back
years and years and years
... I see a pattern of one who
preys on the (Jewish) com-
munity."
Seiden's prison term was
the longest handed down in
Denver against a white-
collar criminal in recent
years, according to Dave
Heckenbach, head of the
Denver District Attorney's
white collar crime unit.

Courtroom observers said
that before Seiden was
sentenced on three counts of
theft, he told the judge he
was sorry. "I am not a
monster," he said.
An Atlanta, Ga., Jewish
community leader, who was
fleeced of $900 in June,
1987, called the sentence
"excessive . . . The guy needs
mental help."
Seiden will be eligible for
parole in 12 years, according
to Chief Deputy District At-
torney Diane Balkin, who
prosecuted Seiden. She ask-
ed Bayless, a former pros-
ecutor of white collar
criminals, for the maximum
sentence of 32 years.
The judge also recom-
mended that Seiden pay res-
titution of $4,910 to nine
Denver victims as a condi-
tion of release.
A man of many voices and
aliases, Seiden crisscrossed
the country, concocting con-
vincing sob stories that bilk-
ed scores of Jewish leaders of
amounts ranging from $300
to $1,400. At least three
states, Kansas, New Mexico
and Arizona, want to
