Jesse Jackson Defends
His Remarks On Israel

Jesse Jackson:
Anti-Israel remarks.

stereotype all Jewish peo-
ple."
Jackson spoke during an
inaugural reception Jan. 1
for Mayor David Dinkins. "I
encourage African-
Americans and Jews to enter
dialogues and coalitions
within this country, and I
support Israel's right to exist
with security within inter-
nationally recognized boun-
daries," Jackson said.
At the same time, he said,
"My position is clear: The
present relationship bet-
ween Israelis and Palesti-

said. "He offered both of
them more than they had
before. He used honey rather
than vinegar. He used incen-
tives. Right now, there are
no incentives on the table."
Hours before the inau-
guration, Jackson had
stunned political observers
by off-the-cuff anti-Israel
remarks at a midnight
Dinkins swearing-in
ceremony in the Bronx.
Referring to Israel's
presence in the West Bank
city of Bethlehem, Jackson
was quoted as saying:
"Even while we pray and
celebrate, we are distracted
from this occasion by our
fears. Peace meets brutality
in the Middle East. The bir-
thplace of Jesus the Christ is
under occupation."
According to one veteran
political activist, "Jackson
was trying to make life more
difficult for David Dinkins,
because he sees him as com-
petition."
Jackson, for his part, in-
sisted his remarks were
neither inflammatory nor
inappropriate.
"The new mayor didn't
leave out the Middle East in
his statement today,"
Jackson said, recalling
Dinkins' inaugural vow to
defend "Israel's right to live
in peace and security."
"Of course," Jackson said,
"I agree that the security of
Israel is uppermost in our
minds. But let me add one
thing more: Palestinian
justice and Israeli security
have to be seen as two sides
of the same coin." II]

he Rev. Jesse Jackson
believes the Bush ad-
ministration should
undertake "a bold in-
itiative" to accelerate the
Middle East peace process,
and he suggests appointing
former President Jimmy
Carter to serve as
mediator.
The Chicago preacher and
activist, whose presidential
campaign rhetoric has often
sparked fireworks between
black and Jewish leaders,
also says he favors black-
Jewish coalition-building in
this country.
If he is aware of the deep
and widespread antipathy
he inspires among many
American Jews, however, he
is not ready to admit it.
"Some Jewish people
agree with my positions,"
Jackson said in an inter-
view. "One should not

nians is one that is destroy-
ing both peoples."
Recalling the successful
Israeli-Egyptian peace
negotiations brokered a
decade ago by President
Carter, Jackson said:
"What must happen
ultimately is that, just as
Jimmy Carter took a bold in-
itiative, President Bush
should act. If President Bush
does not want to take such a
bold initiative between
Israelis and Palestinians,
maybe he should ask Jimmy
Carter to act as a mediator."
"The genius of the Carter
approach is that he didn't
threaten Egypt and he didn't
threaten Israel," Jackson
