The report cautions that it is necessary to reverse the past's "simplistic view that hate violence is merely a crime problem," and embark on "the more difficult task of counteracting the message of hatred spread by white supremacists." The study indicates that skinheads and other racist groups are strengthened by their new, easy access to mass media, such as cable television. Extremist groups have also had success inside prisons, where new hate- filled groups have burgeon- ed, even as the traditional Ku Klux Klan has waned, the report says. The exhaustive report, in- cluding chilling descriptions of paramilitary training and assaults, identified 230 organized hate groups in the country, including skinheads, various Klan fac- tions, assorted neo-Nazis, the Christian Identity movement and the Posse Comitatus. Only Alaska, Hawaii, the Dakotas and New Hamp- shire have no publicly known groups, according to a map that pinpoints racist group activity throughout the United States. The West Coast, from Southern California to the northernmost part of Washington, abounds most in concentration of hate groups. Pennsylvania, according to the report, has seen a recent growth of the Klan, which has dwindled in membership in the South. The center released its study Dec. 19, a day after the Justice Department said that they believed white supremacists were responsi- ble for a wave of package bombs sent to judges who ruled in favor of integration, to courthouses and to the of- fices of the National Association for the Ad- vancement of Colored Peo- ple. Klanwatch believes, however, that the timing of the report and bombings was "coincidental." ❑ 'My Son, The E. German Communist Party Chief' East Berlin (JPFS) — "As a father, I say, does the poor lad really understand what kind of a difficult task he is taking upon himself?" said Dr. Klaus Gysi, the father of Dr. Gregor Gysi, newly elected leader of the Com- munist Party of the German Democratic Republic. In an interview with the Jerusalem Post, Klaus Gysi, 77, a minister of culture and religious affairs until a year ago, and an almost 60-year veteran of the Communist Party, said that he thinks the election of his son was excellent for the party. "My son in a way resembles Mikhail Gor- bachev. He is a man who doesn't like acclamations and doesn't show his feelings in public. "When they announced the result and my son was elected, all the members of the party congress were standing and appaauding but he sat there looking to the side, closing one button in his jacket, and just thank- ed the people by nodding at them. " Gysi said he believed that as party leader his son would not be one to cling to power obstinately. "Changing leadership is the way it is done in the U.S., France and other countries," he said, "and that is the way it will be done now. It is a com- pletely new period for us." "My son has a Jewish background," Dr. Gysi con- tinued. "His mother's father was half-Jewish and my grandmother was Jewish of Sephardi origin. I did not have strong relations with my Jewish relatives since the 1930s, but I think it wouldn't be too wise to stress the Jewish background of my son with the present at- mosphere here. Sometimes, anti-socialism can easily turn into anti-Semitism." Police Nab Kidnapping Ring Tel Aviv (JTA) — Police have arrested four suspected members of a not-for-profit kidnapping ring in the ultra- Orthodox township of Bnei Brak. The group, which calls itself Yad l'Achim (Helping Hand to Brothers), allegedly snatched babies from non- religious foster parents in Israel and smuggled them into the United States for adoption by Orthodox couples. They took no money for the service, which they said had religious motivations. The future—the new age is yours to see and enjoy in the designer jewelry offered by Robert Alexander Jewelers.
