hanukah and New
Year's are over and
now it's time for
Detroit's Jewish families to
start thinking about
"vacationing with Maccabi,"
say two area women.
The two are Barbara
Robinson and Carol Eisen-
shtadt, co-chairmen of the
housing committee for the
1990 Jewish Community
Centers North American
Maccabi Youth Games,
which Detroit will host this
summer.
As things now stand, the
housing committee has
signed up 200 host families
and needs 800 more to house
the 2,200 teenage Jewish
athletes from around the
world who will be competing
in this biennial "mini-
Olympics."
"We're a long way from
home," says Robinson in
discussing the committee's
plans to recruit host families
in the coming months. "It's
not a cause for alarm, but it
is a cause for action.
"Now that the holidays are
over, the big push for hous-
ing is on. We've laid our
groundwork; many in the
community are aware of the
coming event, and now we
hope they're looking into
their summer plans.
"There really isn't a whole
lot a Detroit Jewish family
could plan for in a vacation
that would be more fun than
spending their vacation with
Maccabi," Robinson says.
"In fact, 'vacationing with
Maccabi' may be our
theme."
Families are being asked
to provide housing for eight
days — from Sunday, Aug.
19, to Sunday, Aug. 26. They
also will need to provide all
breakfasts, some dinners
and daily transportation to
and from the pick-up points
around metro Detroit from
which the athletes will take
buses to the JCC. Host
families also will need to
provide a Shabbat evening
dinner for their guest
athlete and plan activities

"All can participate."

for the Sabbath and Satur-
day night.
Host families will be in-
vited to all Youth Games
and related activities, except
for the space-limited Bob-Lo
cruise.
"They can watch any and
all competition, and cheer on
their guest athlete as sur-
rogate parents," Robinson
points out.
Games organizers are try-
ing to accommodate those
who will be at work during
the Games, too, she says.
One effort is the various
pick-up points and times — 7
and 11:30 a.m. — to try to ac-
commodate work schedules.
Another is the effort to ex-
tend the daily schedules.
"We are trying to work it
so that all people can par-
ticipate comfortably,"
