ence from which it was bru-
tally cut off, it became
almost completely incom-
prehensible to a younger ge-
neration of Israelis.
How can one understand
Bialik without Eastern
Europe? How can one under-
stand the complexity of
religion and ethnicity in
Israel if one's only yardstick
is the totally different 18th-
century American separa-
tion of church and state?
What does such a doctrine
have to do with the roots of
Zionism and the concept of a
Jewish state?
And when Hebrew litera-
ture was cut off from the
cultural context in which it
grew, the jejeune attempts to
follow every fashion and
trend of Paris and New York
literati made the literary
scene of Tel Aviv really look
provincial.
With central Eastern
Europe coming back into its
own, Israelis can re-
establish a real link with a
part of European culture for
which many of them have a
feeling of kinship, whose
languages and literatures
some of them remember and
understand.
With the revival of
Eastern Europe as a focus of
a free and pluralistic society,
a revival of Eretz Yisrael as
it has re-emerged on the
shores of the Mediterranean
can also be expected: a coun-
try and a culture linked to
the European heritage.
With the disappearance of
the Communist yoke in
Eastern Europe, Israel too
can come back into its
own. ❑

Little Bob,
my brother, is an architect.
With style. Which is why I
steered him to Newton
Furniture when he bought
his house. We compromised.
I picked the sofa style and
fabric for him. He paid.
Boy, does he have style.
