Your 1-696 story was ex-
cellent. It should be noted
that the 1-696 project entail-
ed, in addition to the "miss-
ing link" between Lahser and
1-75, the widening of the sec-
tion from Lahser to 1-275
from two to four lanes in each
direction, and reconstruction
of the Orchard Lake Road
interchange.
South Oakland County will
not reap the full benefit of
this freeway until more inter-
change access is provided
west of Telegraph Road. The
Michigan Department of
Transportation has proposed
the "Haggerty Connector" as
a major access route to 1-696
(as well as 1-96 and 1-275).
This connector would help
relieve congestion in Farm-
ington Hills and West
Bloomfield.
You wouldn't know it by its
sorry condition, but Nor-
thwestern Highway is a state
trunk line (M-4); it should be
reconstructed to fulfill its im-
portant function as access to
1-696 and US-10.

Elusive Harari
Is In Israel

Tel Aviv (JTA) -- Mike
Harari, the elusive former
Mossad operative said to
have been a top adviser to
Manuel Noriega, has surfac-
ed in Israel and declared
emphatically that he was
only a friend of the deposed
Panamanian dictator.
Harari, who reportedly
was sought by U.S. forces
after they invaded Panama
on Dec. 20, appeared on
Israel Television and denied
he had collaborated with
Noriega. He insisted he was
merely in the import-export
business in Panama, dealing
with agricultural equipment
and solar heaters.
"They said I was Noriega's
adviser. I'm not an adviser.
Noriega is not a partner of
mine," Harari declared.
"I was never an arms
dealer, and there are no
Israeli weapons in Panama,"
he added.
Harari was linked to
Noriega in media accounts
that depicted the 62-year-old
Israeli as a mystery man
who recruited and trained
Noriega's personal guard
and was his closest adviser
and confidant.
