I AUTO I Buy a Panasonic Cellular Phone before January 31st and get TWO FOR ONE!* Motorists Need Survival Kit Purchase the Panasonic CM500 Mobile and get the Transportable kit FREE OF CHARGE! An empty coffee can, candle and newspapers don't conjure up warm images, but the three items could be lifesavers if you're stranded this winter, according to AAA Michigan. Those items should be in- cluded in a winter survival kit for your car, advises Robert Miller, AAA Michigan Emergency Road Service manager. "The dozen or so items in the survival kit take up little room in your trunk but are essential during a winter emergency," Tellier said. The winter survival kit should contain: • Empty coffee can, candle, and matches or lighter for a small-scale furnace to generate heat. • Newspapers make great insulation when placed bet- ween skin and clothing. • Carpet strips to place under drive wheels for traction. • Shovel and pet litter which, when spread under the wheels, improves traction. Boots, ice scraper and brush, flares and reflectors, jumper cables, tool kit, flashlight, first aid kit, candy bars and a blanket also should be part of the kit. If stranded, motorists should stay with the car rather than risk exposure walking for help, Tellier said. FREE Antenna FREE Installation FREE Travel Pak SAVE $525.00 31051 Stephenson Hwy. JN To Get Going When It's Snowing Getting stuck in the snow often means "no go" for many motorists, but there are ways to get rolling this winter. To get started, clear a path several feet in front of the wheels by driving forward and backward. If snow is too deep, use a shovel to create a path. With the wheels pointed straight to minimize resistance, shift into gear, gently press the accelerator and ease forward without spinning the wheels. Spinn- ing wheels dig deeper ruts. Stop and let tires cool if wheels spin. For additional traction, place carpet strips, cat litter or other abrasive material in front and behind the drive wheels. Don't let anyone stand directly in line with the tires because objects thrown by spinning wheels may cause injury. For a vehicle that remains stuck, attempt to rock it out of the rut. But check your own- er's manual first to see if the procedure is recommended. C/
