Reform Files
Against Airport
New York (JTA) — The
Association of Reform
Zionists of America has
accused the Israel govern-
ment of discrimination for
allowing the Chasidic
Chabad-Lubavitch organiza-
tion free facilities and the
right to distribute literature
at Ben-Gurion Airport,
while refusing such privi-
leges to non-Orthodox
Jewish groups.
The Israel Religious Ac-
tion Center, a public ad-
vocacy group sponsored by
ARZA, has filed an appeal
with Israel's High Court of
Justice.
According to Rabbi Eric
Yoffie, executive director of
ARZA, the Airport Au-
thority provides Chabad
with various services at tax-
payers' expense, including
office and telephone, and
allows Chabad to occupy its
airport booth rent-free.
Yoffie said the Reform
movement has asked the
Airport Authority for per-
mission to distribute mate-
rials to arriving passengers
at Ben-Gurion but was turn-
ed down.
"It is incomprehensible
that Chabad has been given
this exclusive right, in view
of its record as a non-Zionist
political group that attacks
other Jews and the laws of
the state," Yoffie said.
He observed that a
calender issued by Chabad
makes no mention of Israel's
Independence Day, and that
furthermore, while it claims
to be a tolerant and open
religious group, Chabad in
fact frequently attacks
Reform Judaism.
