"It's easy for people who
don't like Israel to try to por-
tray us as Pretoria's ally."
says a Foreign Ministry offi-
cial. "Those kind of people
won't believe us, no matter
what we do."
During his recent visit to
Washington, Prime Minister
Shamir promised his Con-
gressional critics that he
would look into allegations
that Israel is overly friendly

that the examination is now
taking place, and its fin-
dings should be available
within the next three mon-

What Shamir reports may
well determine whether ac-
cusations of a Jerusalem-
Pretoria connection will fade
— or become a major bone of
contention between Israel
and the U.S. in the coming
decade.

November 9, 1989: The Berlin Wall fell, but where were the echoes
to an earlier November 9 in Germany?

3 Memorable Moments
From The Past Year

RABBI JACK RIEMER

Special to The Jewish News

T

his is the time of year
when the pundits look
back over the events of
the year and try to find some
pattern of meaning in them.
I make no claims to being
an expert and I have no pre-
dictions whatsoever for the
new year. But I would like to
offer you for your considera-
tion my choices for the most
exciting moment of the year,
the most frightening moment
of the year and the noblest
moment of the year.
The most exciting moment
of the year, in my judgment,
was November 9th. That was
the day when the Wall came
down in Berlin. What a won-
derful moment that was.
Whoever loves freedom had to

be moved by the sight of that
ugly barrier that had sepa-
rated people from each other
for so long finally coming
down. Something real, some-
thing different, something
deep, was suddenly happen-
ing in all of Eastern Europe,
and the coming down of the
Wall was the symbol of it all.
The most frightening mo-
ment of the year, in my judg-
ment, was also on November
9th. That was when the
mayor of West Berlin said
with such incredible stupidi-
ty: "November 9th will enter
history."
Will enter history? Did he
not know that it had already
entered history? November
9th, 1938, was Kristallnacht,
the night when hundreds of
synagogues and stores owned
by Jews were broken into and
smashed throughout Ger-
many. For the mayor to say
that November 9th will enter
history is to confess that he
