She is survived by sisters and brother-in-law, Belle and Ben Shaw of Troy, Jennie Levey of University Heights, Ohio, and Mary Meyers of Margate, Fla. MENDEL SHIFMAN, 90, of Southfield, died Dec. 30. He is survived by his wife, Ida; sons and daughters-in-law, Aaron and Marian of West Bloom- field, Alvin and Joan of Southfield; brother and sister, Simon of Southfield and Riva Shifman of Russia; nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. SARA STEINBERGER, 94, of Detroit, died Dec. 30. She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, George and Linda Steinberger of South- field; one grandchild and one great-grandchild. Pauline Jackson Pauline Jackson, of Southfield, who chaired the first Jewish Community Center book fair in 1951 and served on the book fair com- mittee until her death, died Dec. 31. She was 93. "Without Pauline Jackson and Irwin Shaw, there would not be a book fair," said Adele Silver, JCC cultural arts director. "The community is deeply indebted to her." In its 38th year, the annual book fair has grown to be one of the nation's largest book fairs. It features work of Jewish writers. Jackson, a social worker who graduated Phi Beta Kap- pa from Washington Univer- sity in St. Louis, came to Detroit after marrying her late husband, Harry Jackson. They were founding members of Temple Israel. A community activist, she served as the first director of the women's division of the Duchin Productions During the coming week Yeshiva Beth Yehudah will observe the yahrtzeits of the following departed friends, with the traditional memorial prayers, recitation of kaddish and studying of mishnayos. Pauline Jackson Jewish Welfare Federation and founded Operation Friendship, a program to help emotionally disturbed adults which is run locally through the National Council of Jewish Women. She leaves two daughters and a son-in-law, Marjory Jackson Levin of Birm- ingham, Ruth and Robert Newman; four brothers and a sister-in-law, Arthur and Dora, Harry, Bert and Ken- neth Sarason; a sister, Sara Jackson; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Mark D. Manhoff Mark D. Manhoff, 43, of Southfield, died Jan. 1. Mr. Manhoff was a retired accountant, a member of Temple Beth El, Motor City Business Forum Board Member, treasurer of the Forum Foundation, speaker for the Wellness Networks and a volunteer with the In- fectious Disease Department of Henry Ford Hospital. Mr. Manhoff leaves a son, Bradley; a daughter, Jill of West Bloomfield; parents Alvin and Thelma of Southfield; a sister and brother-in-law, Susan and Robert Nusholtz of Southfield. Clement Goldman Clement N. Goldman, 67, of Southfield, died Dec. 29. Mr. Goldman was an administrator-assistant prin- cipal at Holmes Elementary School in Detroit, a former Eagle Scout, a member of the Educators Administrators Association, B'nai B'rith and worked summers for the U.S. Customs Service.
