Calendar issues are just the
beginning. How should diver-
sity be represented? In one
Ann Arbor school this year a
display including packets of
materials was set up detail-
ing Christmas, Chanukah
and Kwanzaa. Benjamin says
the display was not what he
had in mind as the best way
to achieve multi-culturalism.
"For right now it's nodding to
one event by allowing
others,"he explains. But, as
he sees it, it's a necessary
middling step to take.

Curriculum issues are
another problem. The
Holocaust was taught in Ann
Arbor schools this year as a
self-contained unit for the
first time. The experience left
the students and faculty
shaken.
"The teachers felt it was
counter-productive," says
Benjamin. "It was too heavy
for the students."
But Benjamin sees these
events as part of the multi-
cultural change. "These
things will happen. You use
them to solidify what you're
doing. We're feeling our
way." ❑

Superintendent
Hosts Meeting

School Superintendent
Richard Benjamin held'a clos-
ed session with more a dozen
members of the Ann Arbor
Jewish community Dec. 11.
Local rabbis, high school
students, members of the
United Jewish Appeal/Jewish
Community Association and
parents were included.
Discussion ranged on how
the school calendar could be
streamlines and made more
accessible, how the Jewish
community could assist the
schools in reviewing cur-
riculum materials and in-
service training, and what the
schools can do to counteract
prejudice.
Benjamin mentioned that
the recent vandelism in-
cidents at the Washtenaw
Jewish Community Center
were something that the
public schools should address
because such incidents often
spill over to the schools.
"He came to listen to our
concerns," says Judith Seid,
director of the Jewish
Cultural Society. "It also gave
us an opportunity to hear
what he had to say," adds
Rabbi Robert Dobrusin of
Beth Israel Congregation. A
second meeting may be
scheduled in June.
